Cops are not know for their intelligence.

It's a fact that if you give a stupid person a weapon, they will be itching to use it. You see it all the time. So they don't wait for the right moment when it's needed, they wait for the lowest threshold when they can justify using it. It's not all cops, it's the stupid ones.

This case is obviously justifiable, but that's not the point.
The point from this is that the taser is NOT SAFE, it's lethal far too often.

And it's a shock tactic, that will get misused at times of high tension.

We had a case here in NZ recently when a cop pulled over to where a stolen car was parked. He got the man inside the car to get out to be arrested, and a second man stepped out from behind a bush and hit him over the head with a baseball bat. He ended in hospital.

That policeman had a taser, though he had not chance to use it. The point of the story is that if he had a gun, the guy who hit him would have pulled out the gun and shot him. He would end in the morgue instead of hospital. It is better, if you can, to arm police with tasers than with guns. A lot fewer people get hurt.

And yes, I know there are situations where the police have to be armed. But there are lots of situations where they do not have to be.

The flaw in that story, is that the guy could have easily killed him with the baseball bat.
The fact that he didn't means he wouldn't have killed him with the gun either.
But it's a valid point that if a crook knows that the cop has a gun, he's going to take it if he can.

The real lesson from this incident is that cops should be carrying baseball bats. And hiding behind bushes.

Surprisingly we largely agree. My take on excessive Taser use is that it's not stupidity as much as it is cowardice. Cops use Tasers these days rather than exercising one of the other forms of physical force in the continuum of force they have at their disposal because it's easy, safe (for them) and decisive. They care less about the risks to the suspect than they do about not hurting themselves, messing up their uniforms or having to sweat a little while taking a suspect into custody. All they have to do is stand back and zap someone who shows even the slightest bit of reluctance to cooperate. In my day, we had to either talk the person down and get them to cooperate, which I was very good at, or we had to use escalating levels of force beginning with voice, hands, baton, Mace and, as a last resort, firearm.

Lazy cops who fail to recognize that all suspects are innocent until proven guilty prefer to treat everyone as if they are guilty and administer "street justice" if the suspect says so much as a harsh word to them, so they just tase them.

The use of a Taser should be the LAST RESORT before the use of a firearm because, as you quite rightly note, it is a DEADLY WEAPON.

The cop needed a gun, and he also needed classes in street survival tactics, including basic instruction in not placing yourself in a vulnerable position while arresting a suspect. This is why over here an auto theft suspect is never arrested by a single officer, and they are arrested at gunpoint in a very carefully choreographed series of steps intended to prevent exactly the kind of thing that you describe.

That cop got injured BECAUSE he assumed that because guns are banned, criminals will not violently assault police officers. As we see here, the necessity for a police officer to carry a gun has only a little to do with the potential of a criminal armed with a gun and much to do with criminals armed with any of the thousands upon thousands of object that can be used as a deadly weapon.

ALL police officers need to be armed with a firearm, without exception, because it is their duty to be able to respond with deadly force in a situation where time is of the essence in saving the life of a victim of violent attack, including themselves.

Unlikely, yes, but not impossible. Swords, rifles and shotguns disguised as walking sticks have been manufactured in commercial quantities.

A man known as Fifi was tasered in Wales yesterday, just for killing and partly eating a young girl.
The man died shortly after being tasered.

"It's not something we get every day" said a local man.

Police burst into Fifi's room to apparently find him eating one of the girl's eyeballs. It's not clear if she was dead at that point. They shot him with a taser, and he then died as he was being arrested.

It's not clear if the dead girl died of her horrific facial injuries, or was killed before that, or died due to the taser.

Fifi was apparently high on cocaine at the time.

Anyway, a feather duster can be lethal, I imagine. And guns can be non-lethal.
It all depends on the manner in which they're used. Apply too much of either in the wrong place and you're going to kill someone.

See how stupid fucking Brit police are? They have to use a Taser to kill someone eating a girl's eyeball. Around here when we see someone eating a girl's eyeball, we put two in his chest and one in his head to make him stop what he's doing, on the off chance that the girl is still alive.

Nope. Much simpler than that. He got injured because he did not see the guy who was hiding. Nothing to do with such assumptions. Police are trained to expect, and watch for violent resistance. But they do not have eyes in the back of their heads.
