A very dim glimmer of hope for Korea: Belgium to Take It Easy in Match Against Korea.
Very dim indeed, as the Belgian squad is rather strong. :nervous:

The Asian sides (including Australia) have done rather poorly at this World Cup, Even so, Asia has a strong case for getting another place in future World Cups. Strange but true.

I'm thinking of sacrificing a chicken at midnight in hopes of having lightning strike the Belgian side of the field just at the opening whistle.

Whatever the outcome, Korea has already avoided the wooden spoon. Three teams leave the competition with zero points. One of them is Australia. It's placed third last based on goal differences. Though we lost every single match, I'm rather pleased with the way we played against the Netherlands.

You mean we're actually better than 2 other teams?

According to FIFA's world ranking list we are better than a lot more. We are placed at 62 out of 207 teams.

For Korea's sake, I hope their defenders don't just run around aimlessly like they did against Algeria. The first goal was a joke.

FFS, how many more times will we see the German team getting the ball to within a few metres of of the opponent's goal and then skilfully execute a dozen more accurate passes until it finishes up safely at their own goalkeeper's feet?

That sort of describes France last night.

Anyway. how to explain to them dumb Yankess how Team USA can lose and still make it to the next round? :hehe:

8 of the 10 American side have made through - 5 of 6 from COMNEBOL (South America), 3 of 4 from CONCACAF North/Central. Not too shabby. I guess home-ish advantage does count for something.

Germany could play Algeria in the next round. There's a certain history between those two, going back to 1982.

Germany could also play Russia. There's a very different sort of history between those two. :tea:

What? I don't even know what COMNEBOL or CONCACAF means, let alone what bearing they have on the tournament. At any rate, I thought the reason the USA got through to the next round was that while it was equal on points with Portugal in its group, it finished up second out of four on goal differences, and the last two placegetters are eliminated.

Don't mention the war.

Yes ... although Portugal actually had enough chances against Ghana today to win by 4 goals, and that would have put them through.

Anyway, the group permutations are not as complex as they would be if the head-to-head record was the first tie-breaker for teams that finished level. They used to do the World Cup that way for a while, and still do in the European Championships. It makes for some mind-boggling scenarios.

Well, the round-robin format is also known as the American Format in some quarters... 6 matches to a group32 round, 3 possible outcomes = 3^6 conceivable outcomes in any group. The questions are about ranking 2nd and below as, shucks, there seem to be so darn many draws in international futbol.
