Corn

Post by Tero » Sun Dec 01, 2013 2:40 pm

I'm in a car driving and texting...no not driving.

But why do we grow so much corn? We can't turn it all into cows. Or ethanol. Seems wheat and soy bean would feed more people.

Farming corps make more $$ from useless subsidized maize than they would from actually useful crops?

The world production of corn?
My guess,

It's chicken-feed. For about fifty billion chickens. Gallus gallus domesticus. Conservation status : Not really endangered.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

High fructose corn syrup - the principal sweetener used in processed foods and beverages (at least in the US).
Although it may look like a forum, this site is actually a crowd-sourced science project modelling the slow but inexorable heat death of the universe.

Yep. Though sucrose, from sugar beet or sugar cane, is far cheaper to produce, massive government import tariffs on sucrose keep HFCS artificially competitively priced and stop US food manufacturers importing sucrose.

That's America doing that. The land that sets itself up as a beacon of free-market forces. Looks like protectionism to me, but what do I know? :tea:

One very useful product out of corn is corn oil. You can now make margarine with no trans fats out of it.

Don't forget the immensely profitable lysine trade....until the Feds caught up with them.
BTW the movie is hilariously good.

Yep.

My country is currently in negotiation with the USA to try to establish a free trade deal. Guess what the sticking point is?

Yep, it is American protectionism of its industries. The American negotiators want NZ to stop buying generic drugs, for example, and pay ten times as much for American made drugs. NZ does not subsidise anything. Zip, zero, de nada. America has masses of payouts from the poor taxpayer to wealthy businesses, and then claims it does not have enough money to pay for decent healthcare for its poor.

BG, it may well be that some of our US conservatives on the forum will agree with part of your criticism here...

Jim

I would expect that to be the case. Most of the Americans on this forum are essentially honest people.

Our case for survival before it's too late
