Being true to oneself is one of the most important lessons we are trying to teach our daughters (they are now about half LP's age). The most demanding / complex part of it may well be how to combine personal integrity with living in a society, working and communicating with other people. I expect to be learning about that for as long as my brain will work.

Peace.
Well, that's kind of exactly what I was trying to say but with different words. Being true to yourself is sometimes a complex learning experience. Sometimes it works for you and sometimes against you. All I was trying to say is just that. To take this whole episode as a learning experience.

I was only trying to be supportive and I have nothing to let go since I'm not stuck in this. Why are you dissing me about it? Well, never mind, it don't matter, as we all are allowed to express our thoughts.
kiki I'm sorry that I misread you. I interpreted some of your comments as if you meant that you (based on age and experience) know better than LP herself how she should handle this situation. And I don't think anyone is ever in that position (among mentally competent enough grownups, that is). But this appears to have been more in my eye than in your intended message, so I apologize for coming across as unfriendly.
"The internet is made of people. People matter. This includes you. Stop trying to sell everything about yourself to everyone. Don’t just hammer away and repeat and talk at people—talk TO people. It’s organic. Make stuff for the internet that matters to you, even if it seems stupid. Do it because it’s good and feels important. Put up more cat pictures. Make more songs. Show your doodles. Give things away and take things that are free." - Maureen J

No problem. I'm 54 and still learning. I tell you one thing, I would never want to be in my 20s again. Auchy, mistakes gallore, one of them being marrying the wrong person the first time around. And only at 40 did I finally accept that my mother was never going to change and I'd just accept her freaky nature as is. Yea some of us take longer to learn than others. I hope my daughters take some of my advice, it will save them years of frustration. Never know if they will or not. Nothing I can do about it. It's their life.

Sorry to steal this thread "all about memememe" but I just wanted to explain more.

Cheers

I think what you've contributed is positive, Kiki - and it's part of what I like about friends made through these boards (who tend to be intelligent), and speaking to older people in general.

I still remember a conversation with Durro (a forum member most active on RatSkep these days), and the woman who went by the name Aesthetic Atheist on RD.net, late on the Saturday night of the Atheist Convention in Melbourne in 2010. Durro said he thought he had it all sussed by the time he was about 15; then got to 21 and realised he didn't know anything back then, but he had it all sussed now; then got to 30 and realised how little he knew back then, but that he definitely knew it all now; then got to 40… and you get the picture… :hehe:

And purely incidentally, I just saw one of my benign e-stalkers reading this thread. :tea:

I won't call him out, but I know him in person, he's nice, and he fancies me - and he once said to me, in a very good-humoured tone, when we were discussing where we lived: "Oh no, don't tell me where you live. Then I'll just stalk you." :hehe:

LP:

Please accept my apology. I got into a thread that had been going on for a long time and I did not know the history. I did not know your relationship with RDF so I just assumed you were a nut. I realize now I had no business offering you advice about this issue.

Oh, and just one last dig - as per the 'blackmail' charge… As I said on the 5th of November:

How trollish of me. :smug:

And can I just add, as another parting shot - one thing that bothers me now is Paula's, or whoever's, mixed feelings about whether to be decent or spiteful to me. Deleting all of my posts in a particular account was just spiteful. It wasn't horribly spiteful - but it was nothing BUT spiteful. Especially when you factor that my posts were reinstated, only to be eviscerated wholesale again. It was simple spite - if wavering temporarily towards good faith. What's the point of that?

And my requests for information on RDFRS… Anyone who had read my initial emails could have been in little doubt about my sincerity and honesty. I did not blackmail them. Richard is probably only going on her say-so that I did blackmail them. Refusing to respond to my simple enquiry seems, again, nothing but spiteful. And since I don't honestly think there was any indication of blackmail in my emails - I think it was dishonest as well as spiteful to give Richard that impression. And I just don't like that. I can't help but feel that I'm owed an apology in this, too, to be frank. But whatever…

I evidently have justified grievances against them, which they chose to exacerbate rather than resolve, here. And other than my occasional testiness and pushiness when I get in a tizz about something, or am picking a scab - their grievances against me are mostly fictional and imagined.

What we won't do, however, is respond to individuals who have been put on a black list due to a long history of persistent, excessive, stalker-like contact, ranging from obsessive, daily harassment to out-and-out hate mail; and nor, of course, will we under any circumstances respond to attempted blackmail, whatever form that might take.
I just re-read this, and it really fucking hurt - more than the first reading. And even though I know that it is somewhat factually inaccurate, and that it doesn't sit with what my intentions were, and that Richard has apologised, and that I've in some way set the record straight - it still upsets me. I get so stupidly worked up about things. I can be such an idiot. I can't bear myself, sometimes.

Sorry…

What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."
