French? uh, any Frankish and Roman invaders are long since assimilated in, and we no longer have them to cast out... now, when it comes to giving the African invaders a good look at the holey end of some guns...

On one of the siderails in this discussion. The source for the iodine in Europe has been found (according to IAEA). It was an isotope factory in Hungary http://www.iaea.org/newscenter/pressrel ... 01127.html

The nuclear ones were apparently withdrawn from service in 1992.
Agreed though that they make more sense for the likes of Israel, for whom a proper SSBN (Nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine) is probably not a realistic option.
Yes. I'm sure Israel would also have use for conventional cruise missiles, though. Although, if the nuclear option were considered to take care of Iran's nuclear weapons program, cruise missiles would likely be the best option for delivery, given their accuracy.

It does strike me that for Israel, submarines make more sense as a cruise missile platform than as a torpedo platform. They don't need to be a sea power but they might well want to be able to launch cruise missiles from places beyond israel proper.

That's a dumb argument against Israel having nuclear-weapon-deploying submarines.

Kir, you keep asking for published evidence, when the whole subject is kept as state secrets. That's why it's a silly demand.
But just read through your own link :
wikipedia wrote: The CIA believed that Israel's first bombs may have been made with highly enriched uranium stolen in the mid-1960s from the US Navy nuclear fuel plant operated by the Nuclear Materials and Equipment Corporation, where sloppy material accounting would have masked the theft.[47][48]
If you believe the story about sloppy accounting, you really are mega-gullible.

You can't claim that lack of evidence => "it must exist because it's a closely guarded secret"

"The CIA believed ..." - So the CIA must be part of the secret plot as well, because it's not saying that the US was officially involved.

As for the Israelis taking advantage of "sloppy material accounting" - possibly with the help of one or more rouge inside operators - I can certainly see that as plausible. The world is full of examples of bad accounting and stock management, even with the most expensive and sensitive materials. And accounting for nuclear materials was not taken as seriously then as it is now. :coffee:

Kir, you're performing somersaults of logic there.
Can I give you the bleeding obvious conclusion? The US supplied the uranium, and put out that story as a cover?
For fuck's sake, this is nuclear materials for the US military, not bagels. Do you think Mr. Cohen the accountant ran out of fingers?

I would also like to add, Klr where do you think Israel has obtained its uranium and enriched it since 1973? Answer: America.

You're the one doing the somersaults not only of logic but of belief.

Proposition: The USA is officially involved at the highest levels in arming Israel with nuclear weapons.

Evidence for the above: None to really speak of. At various times: Prevarication, indecision, turning a blind eye, incompetence ... all yes. But actual direct involvement? Nada

Conclusion: It's all be being kept super-secret, so much so that even the likes of Seymour Hersh* has never gotten wind of it.

Just how ridiculous is that? Where are the whistle-blowers? You'd think by now someone would have leaked something. Or maybe it's all been somehow suppressed, just like the faked moon landings or the 9/11 inside job. [/sarcasm]

*And amongst many other things, he has investigated the Israeli nuclear program. He even wrote a book about it:

Gawd wrote:I would also like to add, Klr where do you think Israel has obtained its uranium and enriched it since 1973? Answer: America.
Since you ask: South Africa - 50 tons of uranium in 1977, which Israel is apparently more than capable of enriching and reprocessing by itself.

Most likely the causation would have gone in the other direction, with the sloppy accounting in large part a result of the diversions.
