There was that guy that made biodegradable plastic last year (or year before).

Do you mean the guy who discovered a plastic eating microbe? Or is this a different one that I haven't heard about.

Not really a breakthrough, but sort of related and quite amusing...

"Two New Zealand schoolgirls humbled one of the world's biggest food and drugs companies after their school science experiment found that their ready-to-drink Ribena contained almost no trace of vitamin C."
