Re: Global Climate Change Science News
Meh. You're triggered far too easily. And the alternative to your perspective is not going back to the stone-age. You just tell yourself that as a way of invalidating criticism. Invoking a glass-half-full position misleadingly suggests that when it comes to dealing with drivers and consequences of Global Heating there's a 50/50 balance between action and remedy and inaction and disaster. That is not the case - the odds are weighted far more towards inaction and disaster at the moment.
One way to consider this is to think about the climate risks and vulnerabilities of someone who was your age now in the year you were born, and compare that to the risks and vulnerabilities of someone born today who manages to reach your age.Europe unprepared for rapidly growing climate risks, report finds
Europe is not prepared for the rapidly growing climate risks it faces, the European Environment Agency (EEA) has said in its first risk assessment.
From wildfires burning down homes to violent weather straining public finances, the report says more action is needed to address half of the 36 significant climate risks with potentially severe consequences that it identifies for Europe. Five more risks need urgent action, the report says.
“Our new analysis shows that Europe faces urgent climate risks that are growing faster than our societal preparedness,” said Leena Ylä-Mononen, the EEA’s executive director.
The report looks at how severe the climate threats are and how well prepared Europe is to deal with them. It says the most pressing risks – which are growing worse as fossil fuel pollution heats the planet – are heat stress, flash floods and river floods, the health of coastal and marine ecosystems, and the need for solidarity funds to recover from disasters.
When the researchers reassessed six of the risks for southern Europe, which they described as a “hotspot” region, they found urgent action was also needed to keep crops safe and to protect people, buildings and nature from wildfires.
There is increasing evidence of adaptation but “it’s certainly not enough”, said Robbert Biesbroek, a report author from Wageningen University, who also co-led the chapter on Europe in the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report on adaptation.
“It’s not going quickly enough and it’s not reaching the ones that need it most,” he s
aid. “It’s quite scary in that sense.”...

Pretentious twaddle ...
Until you lived through Duck and cover and the Cuban Missile crisis you have little sense of impending doom that kids feel.
Climate change will change civilization and in some cases for the better.
It won't end civilization ....I'd far rather focus and be aware of what we ARE doing to mitigate the negative consequences instead of the hand wringing live in a hut you evince.

Re: Global Climate Change Science News
Meh. Things have moved on grandpa.
The fossil lobby are effectively, fundamentally, anti-science climate deniers. Science holds little sway with them - other than when it can be bent to obfuscate their complicity and/or serve their pecuniary interests.
I'm always happy to talk about atmospheric science etc, though the drivers and impacts of Global Heating are clearly rooted in social, economic and political issues rather than scientific quandaries. I'm also happy to talk about why we're not sciencing our way out of the crisis, even if you find that kind of thing somewhat triggering.

Re: Global Climate Change Science News
moreScientists divided over whether record heat is acceleration of climate crisis
Some believe global anomalies are in line with predictions but others are more concerned by speed of change
Jonathan Watts and Tural Ahmedzade
Sat 16 Mar 2024 19.00 AEDT
Record temperatures in 2024 on land and at sea have prompted scientists to question whether these anomalies are in line with predicted global heating patterns or if they represent a concerning acceleration of climate breakdown.
Heat above the oceans remains persistently, freakishly high, despite a weakening of El Niño, which has been one of the major drivers of record global temperatures over the past year.
Scientists are divided about the extraordinary temperatures of marine air. Some stress that current trends are within climate model projections of how the world will warm as a result of human burning of fossil fuels and forests. Others are perplexed and worried by the speed of change because the seas are the Earth’s great heat moderator and absorb more than 90% of anthropogenic warming.

Re: Global Climate Change Science News
We're not fucked ...enough of the catastrophe tropes...the question addressed is if current mitigation like reduced sulphur in heavy oil from shipping has also reducing global dimming ( ala 70s ) enough to kick the temps up a notch.
Less dimming means higher absorption in the oceans which are getting rather warm.

Re: Global Climate Change Science News
Just 57 companies linked to 80% of greenhouse gas emissions since 2016
A mere 57 oil, gas, coal and cement producers are directly linked to 80% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions since the 2016 Paris climate agreement, a study has shown.
This powerful cohort of state-controlled corporations and shareholder-owned multinationals are the leading drivers of the climate crisis, according to the Carbon Majors Database, which is compiled by world-renowned researchers.
Although governments pledged in Paris to cut greenhouse gases, the analysis reveals that most mega-producers increased their output of fossil fuels and related emissions in the seven years after that climate agreement, compared with the seven years before.
In the database of 122 of the world’s biggest historical climate polluters, the researchers found that 65% of state entities and 55% of private-sector companies had scaled up production.
During this period, the biggest investor-owned contributor to emissions was ExxonMobil of the United States, which was linked to 3.6 gigatonnes of CO2 over seven years, or 1.4% of the global total. Close behind were Shell, BP, Chevron and TotalEnergies, each of which was associated with at least 1% of global emissions.
The most striking trend, however, was the surging growth of emissions related to state and state-owned producers, particularly in the Asian coal sector.
This expansion, which has continued since, runs contrary to a stark warning by the International Energy Agency that no new oil and gas fields can be opened if the world is to stay within safe limits of global heating. Climate scientists say global temperatures are rapidly approaching the lower Paris target of 1.5C above the pre-industrial era, with potentially dire consequences for people and the rest of nature.
“It is morally reprehensible for companies to continue expanding exploration and production of carbon fuels in the face of knowledge now for decades that their products are harmful,” said Richard Heede, who established the Carbon Majors dataset in 2013. “Don’t blame consumers who have been forced to be reliant on oil and gas due to government capture by oil and gas companies.”...

Re: Global Climate Change Science News
Need to use all the fossil fuels in a race for the singularity rather than trying to cut back on their usage in the hope that some time travel effect will spring into action for climate change. The singularity should supply the raw materials and logistics for the massive geo-engineering projects to control the climate. You only have to look at the potential for AI to see where the counter-intuitive lay of the land leads. Back to the oil billionaires and capitalism and away from this insidious neo-marxist cultural turn...America has taken.
