For some reason this reminds me of an SF short story (Asimov or Clark, I think...) where a spaceship finds the remnants of a supernova which destroyed an alien civilisation nearbye, and careful calculation of its position and time of explosion suggests it was the star of Bethlehem...

The title, strangely enough, was "The Star". It has three endings I know of.
