For some reason this reminds me of an SF short story (Asimov or Clark, I think...) where a spaceship finds the remnants of a supernova which destroyed an alien civilisation nearbye, and careful calculation of its position and time of explosion suggests it was the star of Bethlehem... :?

The title, strangely enough, was "The Star". It has three endings I know of.
