What is this made of?

Post by Tero » Sun May 30, 2021 12:27 pm

Many times I have a hard time figuring out what consumer product, poisons, etc. used in the house are made of.

We had some camp soap left over from like 10 years ago. I wanted to know what is camp soap. Well, it's traditional soap made from fatty acid an lye.

Most claim to be Castile soap/ Aleppo soap:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aleppo_soap

Only they are liquids so they are not exactly that.

They claim to be natural and biodegradable, not "synthetic." The only problem is that sodium laurel sulfate is also biodegradable*. And the detergents we use today are mostly palm oil, not petroleum based. You reduce the acid end to alcohol and go on to make sulfate.

(*Biodegradability
The ability of a chemical to decompose into simple, nontoxic components under ambient environmental conditions within a short period of time (typically 96 hours) means that it is biodegradable. SLS is readily biodegradable under aerobic and anaerobic conditions and, therefore, does not persist in the environment.8,37,45 The biodegradation of SLS occurs via hydrolytic cleavage of the sulfate ester bond leaving inorganic sulfate and fatty alcohol. These fatty alcohols undergo oxidation to produce fatty acids, which are degraded by β-oxidation and fully mineralized and incorporated into the biomass.45 Thus, the decomposed by-products of SLS are benign to the environment.) from https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4651417/

You can ask here if you have other stuff you want to know about. Except glue. I won't research glue.

"Tero, what's wrong with glue?"

It's a sticky subject.

Does storing glue in the freezer really make it last longer? :ask:

No, the freezer will not last longer. Maybe if you glue it. If the rubber seal in the door is loose.

Not really about make up, but does anybody know why women develop super smelling and super hearing abilities as they get past menopause. I swear my wife can smell a fart on a TV program, and she finds more and more food smells objectionable as time goes on. Soon I wont be able to cook anything in the house if she is to return within six hours. She is OK with her TV programs but I can't listen to mine without earphones. I know my sense of smell is nearly non-existent due to exposure to papermill sulfur leaks and I require hearing aids to follow a quick conversation unless the person is forewarned about my problem. I find mask wearing annoying because the straps strip off my hearing aids. Also hearing aids, mask and glasses are a pain when worn simultaneously. So I wear a mask if forced to deal with public in town. I can see and hear well enough without aids, and if I miss something it probably wasn't important. End of rant. :zombie:

Well, the masks were stupid. They were easy to take off and put back on but they got weird soon, around the ears. The masks I used in the lab the last 18 years went behind the head. Like this but a much better fit at the face.

They sell plastic straps here that you can use to turn the masks with short straps into ones that go behind the head. We call them earsavers.
