I have read (a long time ago and I can't remember where) that one of the factors in our 'success' as a species is our more or less relentless and non-stop desire to have sex compared to many other mammals which come into 'season' and so on.

A pleasurable way to 'succeed' I guess!

The "nuclear family" had something to do with it. The male could hunt and the females did the chores around camp and gathered things, so they could do most of that as long as the children could walk a mile or two. The infants had to be carried.
