Would you buy an electric car?
I bought a diesel car three years ago partly because we were being told they were better for the environment. About three months after I bought it they started saying diesel owners were poisoning the planet! You can't effing win.
I will be looking to change it in abit - when the dust settles from the house move and I am thinking seriously of getting an electric car. Maybe an e-golf - an estate if they do one.
Thing is we are a pretty isolated small urban area as they go in the UK. The nearest next city is Newcastle and the east coast about 75 miles away. You would have to recharge to do a return trip.
Is the technology ready yet? I'm not so sure. I like the idea though. Thoughts?

Yes. In fact I'm going to get one for my first car.

They seem to have improved mileage but from what I’ve read it doesn’t take much to get well below what is advertised. For example if the weather is very cold it could cut your 150 down to around 80. Or so I have read. I’m very keen though.

Re: Would you buy an electric car?
No way. About 70% of our electricity is generated by burning coal. Another 15% by burning gas. Charging an electric car is about as costly in terms of producing CO2 as any other.
If you add the environmental cost of producing that humongous battery and the cost of replacing it every few years, electric cars in Australia are a net retrograde step.
From a more personal point of view, I'd not get from home to the nearest major city without a recharge along the way, and I don't fancy a lengthy, enforced break part of the way through what should be not much more than a four hour trip.

Not likely for the next car. Moving to smaller car, though. Gasoline is slightly better than coal, about half the energy is from H which goes to H2O not CO2. Propane is best of carbon fuels. Well, Ethanol has some advantages too.

My brother just got a mitsubishi something or other. Pretty cool car, like the future has arrived early.
I'd definitely get one, but only if it drives itself.

One's Gentleman's Gentleman should drive. After laying out one's clothing, of course.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Self driving cars have no future. The design of cities makes them irrelevant. There will be no streets to travel on. You will still have to walk to the parking garage.Brian Peacock wrote: ↑Sat Jun 23, 2018 9:17 pmMy brother just got a mitsubishi something or other. Driverless vehicles are the future. What's going to fade is individual ownership of personal transport. Urban planning will evolve, just as it always has, to accommodate the new reality.

Sorry just look a future city designs; no place for the car. The new reality is public transport and cycling.Brian Peacock wrote: ↑Sun Jun 24, 2018 10:55 amDriverless vehicles are the future. I'm not sure how that is incompatible with what I said.

The idea of private travelling will fade away I agree along with individual travelling. Mass transport is the future. Jump on jump off systems.Brian Peacock wrote: ↑Sun Jun 24, 2018 11:06 amI'm not sure how that is incompatible with what I said.
