Blade design is of course vital, but if you have 2 blades with the same design, but one is twice the length of the other, then under the same wind speed, at the same elevation, the longer one will generate 4 times the power.

But the two blades would not be designed the same. That is totally hypothetical .

The OP was hypothetical. I was struck by the mathematical relationship between blade length, area swept by the blades and the squaring of the energy output when the length is doubled. It was about the maths involved not the practicalities of wind power.

Although friction, turbulence and whatnot make the increase in electricity output rather less than the increase of the swept area squared, it is not going to be linear.

Here's a real world comparison:

Image

If the increase were linear, a swept area with a radius of 100 metres would produce 1.5 MW, given that a wind turbine with a swept area with a radius of 10 metres produces 0.15 MW. The actual output is more than twice as much.

In the diagram above, let's compare the 1.5 MW turbine with a swept area of approximately 3420 square metres, with the 2.5 MW turbine with a swept area of approximately 5674 square metres. The power produced is almost exactly proportional to the swept area, as I have consistently asserted...

I'm sure that is a factor but the OP was about the relationship between blade length and energy production and for me at any rate the odd thing that it is so proportional.
Blade length is not the story but design is.

Wind Turbine Blade Design, Flat or Curved

Wind turbine design: Building a better blade
No. The story is blade length. That is what the OP says.
Yeah, some are confusing the design and engineering practicalities of turbine manufacture with the mathematical relationship between blade length and potential energy.

Hopefully I will be strictly punished for this remark!

Nothing.

Time to wind this discussion up, methinks.
