Another maffs thing I don't unnerstand
I am interested in all things alternative energy and was watching a Youtube thing about wind turbines.
Turns out that for every doubling of the length of a wind turbine blade/vane it squares the amount of energy produced.
That seems incredibly neat and tidy to me and I can't begin to understand why.
Help stoopid Rum please.

It'll sweep four times the area. Might be something to do with it? Inverse square law or some such? Usually a equation involved.Rum wrote: ↑Fri Jun 15, 2018 12:21 pmI am interested in all things alternative energy and was watching a Youtube thing about wind turbines.

I'm not sure about the youtume being so right, sure, a longer vane also has a larger area, but it also has more weight to move and more inertia before it moves... still, Cronus seems to be on track.

I was thinking the same as you, Svarty. It doesn't make much sense. Energy return increasing exponentially? Don't think so.

Thing is hollow inside. Not made of solid wood.

it's not even made of wood.... I don't know if it's metal or plastic, but the ecological costs to manufacture it are nonnegligible.

All I remember is the longer the blade the higher starting speed but higher top speed. So it depends where it is being placed. The massive turbines are only suitable for sea use. Land based massive turbines often have to be started by powering the turbine until the wind can take over. Vertical turbines are good in light winds but useless in gales.

From my engineering degree I recall dynamics was harder than statics. Centripetal forces and all that jazz. Thing is spinning with the wind. Got four times the wind twice as far out. Weight is not in it since it is the spinning with the wind not as a result of the momentum of the propeller. I had a book on helicopter aerodynamics one time. Headache or what. At least there's no dead mans curve.

The effective area of a wind turbine is the circle described by the radius of it's blades.
- Area of a circle = πr2
10m radius: A = 314.16m2
20m radius: A = 1256.64m2

Basic geometry from Form 3. Of course I knew that..but kind of forgot it...*cough*Brian Peacock wrote: ↑Fri Jun 15, 2018 8:52 pmThe effective area of a wind turbine is the circle described by the radius of it's blades.
The effective area of the 20m turbine is 1256.64/314.16 = 4 times greater than that of the 10m turbine.

Re: Another maffs thing I don't unnerstand
It's actually quite straightforward. The energy that can be captured per time unit depends on the total volume of air passing through the swept area per time unit. Airspeed is one factor, the other is the swept area. This is a circle, whose radius is the length of the blades. Since the area of a circle is proportional to the square of the radius, so the power generated is proportional to the square of the blade length.Rum wrote: ↑Fri Jun 15, 2018 12:21 pmI am interested in all things alternative energy and was watching a Youtube thing about wind turbines.

Yeah I love (hate) those youtube videos on science that tell you a whole bunch and leave the last bit out, cause it’s too complicated.
