'Space genes' — how an astronaut is now different from his twin brother

After a ground-breaking space flight, an identical twin has slightly a different gene expression from his brother.
A real-life space oddity: After a ground-breaking space flight, a NASA astronaut has been found to have a slightly different gene expression from his identical twin brother.

The astronaut, Scott Kelly, spent a year aboard the International Space Station while his identical twin, Mark, remained on Earth.

“Mark and Scott Kelly are still identical twins; Scott’s DNA did not fundamentally change,” wrote NASA news chief Kelly Humphries in an email. "What researchers did observe are changes in gene expression, which is how your body reacts to your environment."

Clickbait. The whole story can be summed up with "Changes in gene expression, which is how your body reacts to your environment." The space thing is totally irrelevant. Epigenetics happens on earth too.

I'm glad we got that straight. It was really worrying me. ;)

Absolutely no controversy here. The fascinating thing would be to examine the detailed genetics of their children. There are heretical evolutionary theorists (I am not one of them) who aver that epigenetic changes can, in some circumstances, be passed on to offspring; they wave their hands, and nod knowingly in the general direction of Lamarck. Whether or not some epigenetic changes are passed to another generation, it can still only be natural selection which shapes the adaptive features of organisms.

Guess height isn't a issue in zero gravity? or direction of travel. Recall women giving birth to footballs with agent orange? After several million years in space all animals take on a spheroid shape with multiple anuses so they can propel themselves with farts through the high density parts of space gas clouds where they live. The space clouds with alcohol are gonna be especially wild and interesting places. :read:
