That's all we need.
A fifth species of malaria parasite can now infect us. Oh, great.
And with global warming it won't be long before malaria comes back to the British Isles (we used to have it here in Roman times).

Malaria is Darwinian. Just ask the people with sickle cell.Horwood Beer-Master wrote:A fifth species of malaria parasite can now infect us. Oh, great.

Like most of my friends, I have passed malaria and dengue. They are not a joke, but for people with access to hospitals, they are not a drama...Horwood Beer-Master wrote:A fifth species of malaria parasite can now infect us. Oh, great.

No idea. It was in Senegal and it was so common there that they would not investigate it much... They put you in bed for as long as necessary with daily injections. It has never recurred, so I guess (and hope) that wasn't one of the persistent bitches.Horwood Beer-Master wrote:Which malaria did you get?Sisifo wrote:Like most of my friends, I have passed malaria and dengue. Down there they don't lab the thing much. If you have the symptoms of malaria, they give you medicine for malaria. If you get better, it was malaria...
As I say, it hasn't haunted me back again. Now, the amoebas and giardias, those passengers give a party every four months or so... regardless how much I have tried to evict them.

In West Africa it's most likely to be Plasmodium falciparum, which is the nastiest of the lot (certainly in it's likelihood to kill you) as it can cause infected red blood cells to stick to the walls of certain blood vessels, and in turn become sticky to other infected cells, causing blockages which can cut off the blood supply (particularly to the brain or (in pregnant women) the placenta). Thankfully reoccurrence in P. falciparum it's almost unheard of.Sisifo wrote:No idea. It was in Senegal and it was so common there that they would not investigate it much...
