I know that to limited North American understanding, democrats pass for lefties...

Please remember that until WWII, and maybe later, the dems were actually more conservative than their slave freeing rivals: and that what passes for 'lefty' in the US is regarded as dead right, barely moderate in most western democracies.

The Republicans are a little more naked in their determination to ensure ever more wealth and power to corporations and the elite, some Democrats dabble a little in extending social programs, but they are both creatures of American power and military might across the world, and a desperate need to preserve the status quo, and try to halt the inevitable decline of the American Empire...
