Unmanned Aircraft Makes Aircraft Carrier Landing

Wow -- this has to be quite intimidating to anyone who may get in a tussle with the US of A. Soon, we can just pump out unmanned vehicles by the boatload and just let them run nonstop 24-7 without the need for humans on the craft. the UAVs can be much smaller than regular fighters and as such we can pack more of them onto a carrier. That should boost the usefulness of carriers quite a bit.

Until we develop true artificial intelligence, they'll still have to be flown remotely by a real person, at least in combat situations.

The obvious advantage of them is that they can pull high G maneuvers that no human pilot could without blacking out. They can be faster and outmaneuver any craft piloted by a human. Of course, I'm assuming they'd be used in an air superiority role.

I assumed they'd mainly be used in stealthy attacks to take out command, control, communications and supplies. Get couple thousand of those things buzzing sortees 24-7, and you could accomplish quite a bit in a short amount of time.

^ I'm reminded of that robot swarm video on Youtube.
I bet something like that could be dropped from a great altitude, autorotate to the objective/s and then do the biz.

Big deal. I hear Dominoes is experimenting with a remote controlled helicopter that can fly one of their crappy pizzas to your house faster and cheaper than a human driver.

That would be awesome, though. A huge deal.

I'd love to be able to have my groceries and such airlifted to my house. Maybe they could even have copter systems at the local mall, and I can get same day service to deliver a new pair of jeans and shirt when I need them.

We've got mini-chopper remotes here in B.C.

They're actually pretty cool - twin rotors, smaller than a person, 4-5 hours endurance. I think every home should have at least one.

They're still going to be rather expensive. Cheaper than manned aircraft (anything would be cheaper than the F-22 and F-13), but more than pocket-money.

No doubt the Chinese have already "acquired" the blueprints and other technical info for this and will soon be making their own.

Give 'em time. They're still trying to figure out how to use that aircraft carrier that they bought under false pretences from the Russkies.

In the future, we can just let the robots fight and humans can stay at home and watch the results on the telly.

I'm not sure that this is such a tactical advantage.
Men are expendable in war. It's the hardware that takes time and money to produce. So having a real pilot is probably better protection for the valuable hardware.

And if aircraft carriers are to be so decisive, then it's surely cheaper to counter that threat with submarine and torpedo technology that to join a tech arms race in drones?

The real advantage of drones is in peace time. It eliminates the danger of having one of your pilots shot down, and paraded in a humiliating fashion in front of the world's media.

In war time, nobody would give a shit about that.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

The remake of Top Gun is going to be boring.
