What if you want a Supercharger of your own? Four your four Teslas of the typical American family.
Powerful fast-charging stations, like Tesla Superchargers, which can charge at up to 250 kW, are extremely expensive to make due to the powerful electronics in them.

We have seen sale prices of over $100,000 for some chargers, and it’s not unimaginable to see the cost doubling with installation depending on several factors.

It makes it all the more impressive that Tesla appears to be able to manage to keep the cost under $50,000 per charger.

As Australia passes the milestone of 100,000 electric vehicles on our roads, an environmental downside to reducing carbon emissions is looming sooner than many would expect: huge numbers of batteries that could end up in landfill.

Key points:

Australia will need to deal with an estimated 30,000 tonnes of old EV batteries by 2030

Experts warn the large volume of e-waste could pose health, environmental and fire threats

The national body set up to deal with battery waste says the industry needs to take urgent action

Research from the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) suggests 30,000 tonnes of EV batteries will reach their end-of-life in Australia by as soon as 2030. This is forecast to blow out to 360,000 tonnes by 2040, and 1.6 million tonnes by 2050.
Experts are warning of a "huge waste stream" that poses a triple threat: fire risks in landfill, environmental impacts, and health hazards caused if toxic chemicals leech into land and waterways.
"We need to take action now," said Libby Chaplin, CEO of the Battery Stewardship Council (BSC), the government-backed body set up to plan for battery waste in Australia.

Well they don't pose a hazard if you incinerate them.

Switch to sodium, cheaper.

The key to managing the surge in electric cars (and other lithium battery use) will be to establish a systematic end-of-life recycling process, that can re-use and re-cycle valuable elements.

Said on the peak oil site years ago these technologies would arise, as derivatives of the petro-chemical industry not the alternatives they claim to be, but issues of scalability as the oil became scarcer would stop widespread adoption dead in its tracks. Sooner or later the price of oil will spike and not come down again. Then we'll see how cheap all these electric motors really are (bicycle is both low tech and similar range)

They are in no way derivatives.
according to Auke Hoekstra, director of energy transition research at the Eindhoven University of Technology. In a paper published in 2020, Mr. Hoekstra writes that batteries will most likely last more than 500,000 kilometers, or 310,000 miles; that research shows gasoline and diesel pollute more than previously thought; and that the energy needed to create batteries has already declined while electricity production from renewable sources is growing.

Mr. Keoleian said he expects that electric vehicle emissions will improve, even in those U.S. counties that rely on coal to create power for the vehicles. “In the future, B.E.V. emissions will decrease due to the retirement of coal plants and the increase in renewable energy sources,” he said. “Our message is that we need to accelerate the transition to battery electric vehicles.”
Multiple studies have supported the view that electric vehicles are already the more environmentally friendly choice — and will only become more so as technology progresses.

“The Ford-financed study is 100 percent correct,” Mr. Hoekstra said. “All studies agree that electric vehicles save between 50 to 70 percent CO2 equivalents and that the time needed to recoup the additional emissions caused by battery production is one to two years. The more you drive, the faster you’ll recoup.
https://www.nytimes.com/2022/10/19/busi ... eries.html

The batteries also have additional uses for home and stationary use even if down to 50% of new.
Any nay saying is just claptrap from the ICE crowd. :smoke:
Places like Ontario Canada have no electricty produced by coal so it is in effect end to end green power.

Scalability before peak oil shortages, not efficiency savings will have done for the tesla dream. Remove all the carbon based footprint from the Tesla production line and how much Tesla would be left? If it does fly, that's just a way of extending the oil era by other means until it has fully run out from the Earth

On our run down the Mornington Peninsular and back, Bron's Tesla Model 3 used about 25% of its capacity. A few hours charging at home tomorrow (hopefully with sun on the solar panels) and it will be back to 100%.

Hey Jim, does the Tesla have a gearbox? I'm thinking not.

Nope, straightforward electric motor drive only. From memory, the Porsche electric sports car does have 2 gears, probably because it needs a higher range of revs...
