Goodbye Alzheimers?

Post by Gawdzilla Sama » Fri Feb 10, 2012 1:30 pm

Now what was I going to say? :thinks:

Oh well, here's something I borrowed from TU.

A cancer drug that sweeps an ominous plaque-forming protein from mouse brains within hours and reverses Alzheimer’s-like behavior in the rodents in days may offer a powerful new way to prevent or even reverse the brain-wasting disease in humans.

The drug, called bexarotene, has been on the market for about 10 years to treat T-cell lymphoma, often after other treatments have failed. But bexarotene can do a completely different job in the brain, researchers report online February 9 in Science.

“This is a pretty fantastic drug,” says Paige Cramer of Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, coauthor of the new study, which used bexarotene to treat mice suffering from an Alzheimer’s-like condition.

I'm just listening to a radio program where they are lambasting the fools who cry miracle drug as soon as the first announcement is in, and before a full array of tests and specific studies on that particular subject have time to be done.

I forget, what's Alzheimer's?

And what year is this again? There is some shit about primaries on TV, so I'm thinking 2010 or 2014, an even number.

I'm glad the research is ongoing. Hope for the best.

When it comes to this particular disease I would put up my sister as a test subject in a second if I thought there was any hope at all.

So long as you're fully conscious that it may not do her that much good, and might have horrible side effects, you're welcome, there is hope and it has to be tried, just with open eyes aout the risks

I'm with Sis on this one, any hope is better than none.

None listed where I could find them, then again, it's currently used as a drug of last resort for lung cancer and the like, I'm not sure much study has yet been done in that area

The company they just started needs a load of money to do the human testing, although they are in luck as this medicine is already FDA approved.

Q: What do you do when you need a load of money from investors?

A: Raise as loud and hysterical a hype as you possibly can manage - which is not especially difficult, seeing as hype also sells news (it's in the ratings, it's in the ratings...)

So who, exactly, are the fools? Could they get the investor money without the hype? Maybe, but with enough hype it is easier and faster. Could these (or any) drugs be developed without investor money? Not with the current arrangement of the medicine market. Do I like the hype? No, but I think that's pretty much beside the point.

But I'm biased: my beloved Annu (paternal grandmother) died a very slow Alzheimer's death. It was traumatic enough to watch as a teenager, and I cannot even start to imagine what it was like "on the inside."
"The internet is made of people. People matter. This includes you. Stop trying to sell everything about yourself to everyone. Don’t just hammer away and repeat and talk at people—talk TO people. It’s organic. Make stuff for the internet that matters to you, even if it seems stupid. Do it because it’s good and feels important. Put up more cat pictures. Make more songs. Show your doodles. Give things away and take things that are free." - Maureen J

The media people who collaborate in the hype and lead lots of sufferers to believe that relief is close at hand
Remember the 80s when they announced a cure for AIDS every other year? How long was it before tri therapies were really able to hold it at bay for 5 years or more?
