Should we kill wolves in national parks?

Post by Gawdzilla Sama » Wed Nov 23, 2011 8:08 pm

Dear Larry,

Thank you for taking the time to contact President Obama and Secretary Vilsack. With your help, we're protecting wolves and sending a powerful message about the importance of our National Forests.

If you would like to do even more to help, please consider forwarding the message below my signature to a friend and encourage him or her to take action too.

With Gratitude,

Jamie and the rest of the Defenders team

-- Forward this Message --

Hi,

Did you know that under a new plan proposed by the State of Wyoming, wolves throughout the southern Bridger Teton and other National Forests in Wyoming could be shot on sight? Help me save these wolves and protect the sanctity of our National Forests. Take action online at http://dfnd.us/rdXGDT.

Thanks for helping...

As top predators, Wolves a vital part of the ecology. In national parks and forests, the state has a responsibility to keep the ecology in balance. Shooting of wolves should only be allowed if there are too many of them, and then under a tightly controlled system.

Fully 80% of the wolves in Wyoming would be eligible to be shot under pending legislation.

Wyoming wolf plan moves forward

Wyoming’s shoot-on-sight wolf plan got approval this week from a state legislative committee, bringing wolves there one step closer to delisting. The full legislature is expected to vote on the plan in February while the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service continues to finalize its proposed delisting rule. The plan, as currently written, would allow wolves across nearly 90 percent of Wyoming to be killed at any time by any means. The remaining portion of the state encompassing the greater Yellowstone ecosystem would be designated a trophy game management area where wolves could still be killed with a hunting license.

You probably don't want to get me started on hunting animals as game. I don't even have time for fishing as a recreational activity.

So is there a reason to start killing them other than for the entertainment of hunters?

'zilla made backhanded reference to livestock safety claims. I'm sure he knows more about this subject than I do. Human safety concerns might be trumped up, too, but aren't realistic in this day and age. Some hunters might resent competition or fear being chased off their kill, but that's not legal justification AFAIK. I know of nothing else.

The excuses haven't changed since 1813, so far as I can tell. Listen to this video, trailer for a movie about “Phantom Wolves of Sun Valley”.

This from a group of people who like to go out with their guns and.. ...er.. ...kill for fun.

Over here fox-hunting enthusiasts would claim "pest control" - an argument that is somewhat undermined by the fact that a group of them were once caught-out providing food and artificial den sites in their area in order to encourage the "pests" so they could increase the chances of a successful hunt.

The irony is that far more people are (and probably always were from the begging of farming) injured/killed by livestock than by wolves and other top predators.

In nature it's so often the large herbivores you've got to look out for - even when you think you've got them under your control.

I wish I could find the transcript of a trial out west where two guy conspired to steal a child's body from a morgue and mangle it so they could claim a wolf did the deed.
