The Science Image Thread

Post by Matty » Thu Sep 22, 2011 7:20 pm

I got asked in my intro to post a few microscopy images (i'm a confocal laser/ fluorescence microscopist by trade) and although i'm more than happy to do so, thought it might be a good opportunity to kick off a thread for any and all science related images.

first off a couple of 3d video renders of cells,

_______________
(L) lilly of the valley root section (sell wall and starch stains) ,
(R)A filter enhanced image of adhesion and cytoskeletal proteins in a breast cancer cell line.

those are both produced by imaging with laser activated fluorescent stains, at multiple (typically 50-100) focal planes through the sample, on a spinning disc confocal microscope,
then rendered with some funky and powerful image analysis software.

then we have some 2d fluorescent micrographs. these are from one of the other techy toys i play with on a daily basis, a laser scanning confocal microscope.

Image Image
(L) fibroblast growth round the site of a myocardial infarction.
(R) the same lilly of the valley slide as in the first vid, but at lower magnification.

Image
Focal adhesion related proteins in a stimulated fibroblast line.
Image Image
(L) multiple cell cycle checkpoint related proteins in HeLa cells.
(R) Mutated clotting factor localisation counterstained with cytoskeleton and nuclear dyes.

Cool . I was wandering how long it would take for Genes to respond, but he beat me to it! :hehe:

Hello Matty, nice images!
heya, and thanks.
Cicada Ommatidia.
sweet, thats part of the compound eye, right?

i am currently rigging up a cannibalized old but decent scope at home with a view to doing some of the black background insect wing type images such as on here.
Shouldnt be TOO techy to pull off in a home set up.

I guess this belongs here: A photomicrography competition with some incredibly cool photomicrographs!
