Watching the final shuttle launch today inspired me to finally get started on a project I've been meaning to get around to for years now: My grandparents (yes, the loopy Christian Science ones) were teachers who had a friend with press credentials who covered much of the early US space program. He used to send them packets of glossy 8x10s and a few 11x14s from NASA, and those were passed down to me. I've been promising myself for years to get them all scanned in, and now I've finally started.
I'm not as happy with the scans as I hoped I'd be - every minor surface flaw in the photos seems to be accentuated; they look much better in person than in the scanned versions. The first batch was the 11x14s because I wanted to get the labor intensive ones done first - they don't quite fit on my scanner, so I had to scan all four corners and stitch them all together in software (which introduced a few glitches in itself).
Anyway, here are some scaled-down versions of the ones I've done so far - as I get more done I'll post them - or maybe some thumbnailed "proof sheet" versions, since the 8x10s are a lot more numerous. Happy to send out the full 600dpi files (usually 2+ MB each for these larger ones) to anyone who wants copies in small numbers.
Most of this group are iconic & very well known images. They 8x10s tend to get closer to the nuts & bolts and better profile some of the people and technology involved.

That last picture doesn't look like it was on the moon .

That is because they didn't really go there
the shadows are all wrong

Outside the ordered universe is that amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the center of all infinity—the boundless daemon sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time and space amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin monotonous whine of accursed flutes.
