World's oceans in 'shocking' decline

The oceans are in a worse state than previously suspected, according to an expert panel of scientists.

In a new report, they warn that ocean life is "at high risk of entering a phase of extinction of marine species unprecedented in human history".

They conclude that issues such as over-fishing, pollution and climate change are acting together in ways that have not previously been recognised.

The impacts, they say, are already affecting humanity.

The panel was convened by the International Programme on the State of the Ocean (IPSO), and brought together experts from different discplines, including coral reef ecologists, toxicologists, and fisheries scientists.

Its report will be formally released later this week.

"The findings are shocking," said Alex Ross, IPSO's scientific director and professor of conservation biology at Oxford University.

"As we considered the cumulative effect of what humankind does to the oceans, the implications became far worse than we had individually realised.

When all the fish run out, we can all just eat Filet-O-Fish from McDonalds instead.

I'm doing a guerrilla operation to release them all back into the wild.

Phew, millions of years of selective breeding isn't for naught, then.

Anyways, there's bacteria and worms in the rocks, we can eat those when we've killed everything in the sea. Filet-O-HellWorm.

No !! I think you will find that the whales are eating all the fish so we should harpoon them all and even if the meat has almost toxic levels of mercury it should be used for school dinners . And don't try and be clever and tell me that not all whales eat fish ,those that don't , eat the little things the fish feed on so they should be slaughtered too .

You came eye to eye with an anemone? I haven't seen a single one of those since the seventies.

It's like they all just upped roots and left in disgust.

As someone said on a beach during one of my marine biology field courses 'With fronds like these who needs Anemones '
