Since he had cat flu recently, I leave a low watt lamp on round the clock for Benji to keep warm under. He spends a lot of time curled up there. In general, though, most things are turned off when not in use.

No, I don't think it works that way. But naked mole rats will die just by screaming at them, so I'm not sure that this is a big concern to the non-naked mole rat community.
