Nuclear reactors

Post by Tero » Tue Mar 15, 2011 10:52 pm

Any future for these? Seems we use a lot of old technology.

Fusion anytime soon?

I remember Bill Gates did a TED talk where he mentions a new kind of reactor design, I think he had put money towards it or something - it was more to do with reducing carbon output and making use of what is normally nuclear waste I think - I don't know what the safety issues of it would be, but he was saying there needs to be more innovation for our future energy needs.

Germany had struck a deal with energy providers a few years back to phase out nuclear energy by I think 2018. Last year they agreed on prolonging operating times for 'younger' reactors. In light of what's happening in Japan, this process was put on hold and politicians and energy providers are committed to phase out nuclear power sooner than planned. I think that's great news.

Here is an interesting article. I can't speak for the US, but Europe certainly got scared by recent events. Let's just hope this has a long term effect.

Roll on fusion reactors; with helium as a by-product, dirgibles will be the future of air transport!

With all the politicians that we have, you'd think hot air balloons would prevail in air transport.

Blighty has an estimated 800 years worth of coal reserves left. Let's burn it and damn the consequences!

Good idea, lets dump all the fancy technology too. Well, we will be a bit short of iron, but we can mine it from our dumps. We will need a little iron for our axes. Power will be provided by horses. Human population will drop to 100 000 000 or less.

If I had my way I'd probably have things moved across the Thorium until other avenues of research are a bit more fruitful.
In the best laid plans of history lie the ruins of the past
And a chronicle of suffering shows the mythic pall they cast
To believe is true religion, but to see is truth at last
Oh no, too late to hold a trial, time doesn't wait for the watchmaker's dial
