A new approach to simulating brain activity in a computer program may shed light on how brains work at the most basic level. Quite an interesting article and there's a lot more good stuff on the project website.

A few years ago a project has been made in order to create an accurate computer model of the brain. Scientists in Switzerland working with IBM researchers had shown that their computer simulation of the neocortical column, arguably the most complex part of a mammal's brain, appears to behave like its biological counterpart.
A Working Brain Model

That refers to Mind uploading - brain emulation or mind transfer - hypothetical process of scanning and mapping a biological brain in detail and copying its state into a computer system or another computational device.
