The next decade of scientific advance
The next decade of scientific advance
What can we expect from the next ten years of scientific progress? I'm really quite looking forward to what emerges! The product of the last decade have proven to be the greatest leap of scientific success possibly ever: it's obvious everywhere you look, from PC franchises to the gaming world of Playstation and Ipods. It's as if everything is accelerating faster than ever before, with the next 10 years being vital to the integrity of the global economy and broader scientific community. We now have what is basically aritifical life, how long will it be before we develop such synthetic genomes into multicellular life!

Two words (actually one word if you count the hyphen) Robo-Sex
I'm looking forward to the innovations in gaming, as well as advancement of study into the human genome, I fully expect to look back in ten years and laugh at how primitive everything looks.
I'm also looking forward to the continuation of Moore's Law with regards to computing power! In 10 years that shit is going to be powerful!

I'm waiting for the personal device that integrates more directly with the human body (not necessarily by plugging directly into the brain). The phone-like device that you don't have to hold in your hand. Essentially, direct connection to the internet and all the services, apps, features and information that that will provide. Info, games, messaging, etc. overlaid onto reality. It will be the most significant change in the way we do things since... well... ever. Yes it won't all be good, but I still can't wait.

Internal combustion applied to personal transportation, telephonic communication, advances in aviation (perhaps more than two people on one plane?), perfection of the battleship as the ultimate instrument of war, the cure for the common cold, a final refutation of Darwinism, and refrigeration for entire buildings.

I really love this idea most, some gent recently injected a micro chip under the skin of his hand. Using it, he can connect with several computer devices and he can open security doors. Not only that, but he infected the chip with a virus DX The idea of 'cybernetics' is really interesting, I think in the near future it could compete with body art or even combine with itI'm waiting for the personal device that integrates more directly with the human body (not necessarily by plugging directly into the brain)

Aren't we all taking "scientific progress" a bit for granted here. Given the pitifully low level of investment in science worldwide, combined with the ballooning growth of pseudoscience and religion, we may well soon be facing a civilisation collapse, like the one that ended the Greek enlightenment and began the dark ages.
I doubt very much it will happen in the next decade, but you never can tell...

I'd gladly welcome that just as much. All my Mad Max fantasies come true.Horwood Beer-Master wrote:Aren't we all taking "scientific progress" a bit for granted here. We've had that 'low investment' for years, science seems to prosper off it.

The world is a thing of utter inordinate complexity and richness and strangeness that is absolutely awesome. I mean the idea that such complexity can arise not only out of such simplicity, but probably absolutely out of nothing, is the most fabulous extraordinary idea. And once you get some kind of inkling of how that might have happened, it's just wonderful. And . . . the opportunity to spend 70 or 80 years of your life in such a universe is time well spent as far as I am concerned.
