Holy Smoke (Ash actually)!

Post by Rum » Thu Apr 15, 2010 6:20 am

Well it isn't every day all flights in the UK are grounded because of a cloud of volcanic ash is blowing our way from Iceland!

But that's what's happening here today. Apparently the 'cloud' is moving down the country from the north of Scotland. Being in the far north of England will will be affected by it now or son if not.

Nothing to see out the window atm!

Let me know if you see anything. They've closed some Norwegian airports as well

I thought this was about me. I do smoke, occasionally. But I never get religious about it.

I had a dusty car too. I will be keeping an eye out for spectacular sunsets over the next few days as well.

I just realised I have a (not terribly good) photo of the glacier with that volcano under it from when I visited Iceland.

This is taken from the southern tip of the island of Heimaey. We walked there to get a view of Surtsey but saw the glacier visible in the clouds on looking back towards the mainland. It looked a lot more spectacular than the photo shows.

 Some reporter on CNN asked a volcanologist when the volcano might stop erupting. His reply:

"In our experience from a few hours to several thousand years."

So worst case scenario, no flights throughout Europe for the next couple millennia.
