Smoothies and vegan food are the new pre-flight pint for UK holidaymakers.

A breakfast pint at the airport is as much a part of the typical British holiday as third-degree sunburn and overindulging on the all-inclusive.

But soaring sales of alcohol-free beer, gut health shots and smoothies suggest a growing proportion of holidaymakers are eschewing pre-flight booze.

Figures from Manchester Airport Group (MAG) show a fivefold increase in sales of non-alcoholic beers at some of its bars and restaurants, while sales are up 7% overall since last summer.

Sales of vegan breakfasts and brunches have grown more than 20% in the same period at Manchester, Stansted and East Midlands airports.

The number of gut health products sold at these airports has doubled since last summer, the figures show, with WH Smith seeing a threefold increase in sales of gut health shots...

Dog treat made from lab-grown meat on sale in UK as retailer claims a ‘world first’

A dog treat made from lab-grown meat has gone on sale at Pets at Home in a move the retailer claims is a world first.

Chick Bites are made from plant-based ingredients combined with cultivated meat, which is produced by growing cells and does not require the raising or slaughter of animals.

The manufacturer, Meatly, said the chicken was produced from a single sample of cells taken from one chicken egg, from which enough cultivated meat could be produced to feed pets “for ever”.

It claims the meat is “just as tasty and nutritious as traditional chicken breast”, and contains the amino acids, fatty acids, minerals and vitamins needed for pet health.

In July, the UK became the first country in Europe to back cultivated meat for use in pet food, after chicken produced by Meatly was approved by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Animal and Plant Health Agency.

Pets at Home said it believed it was the first company in the world to sell cultivated meat for pet food. A limited release of Chick Bites has gone on sale at Pets at Home in Brentford, west London...

Ultra-processed food increases risk of early death, international study finds

Consuming large amounts of ultra-processed food (UPF) increases the risk of an early death, according to a international study that has reignited calls for a crackdown on UPF.

Each 10% extra intake of UPF, such as bread, cakes and ready meals, increases someone’s risk of dying before they reach 75 by 3%, according to research in countries including the US and England.

UPF is so damaging to health that it is implicated in as many as one in seven of all premature deaths that occur in some countries, according to a paper in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

They are associated with 124,107 early deaths in the US a year and 17,781 deaths every year in England, the review of dietary and mortality data from eight countries found.

Eduardo Augusto Fernandes Nilson, the lead investigator of the study, from the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation in Brazil, said that additives such as sweeteners and flavourings harm health not just UPFs’ high levels of fat, salt and sugar.

The authors found “a linear dose-response association between the ultraprocessed food consumption and all-cause mortality” when they examined official surveys previously undertaken in the UK and US, as well as Australia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Chile and Mexico...
