"just an illusion, one that is dispelled by looking inside the machine."

Some thinkers suppose that human consciousness is also an illusion (however personally persuading), once we look into the wetware machine...

In evolutionary terms, a personal feeling of conscious agency is probably a survival enhancing sleight of hand...

Pope Leo XIV has urged governments worldwide to slow the development of AI systems and curb their disruptive effects.
He was supported by Anthropic co-founder Chris Oah, who said firms like his needed outside scrutiny.
It's time we had an AI pope... :Jack:

How could we tell, from our perspective? We're like flatlanders unable to see ourselves from beyond the boundary of our own geometric constraints. We need an objective outside observer - which is probably why the aliens probe us so hard.

given the number of idiotic reforms this one has made, yeah, maybe a computer might do a better job.

Yes, though this line of discourse probably belongs in the 'Mind' thread. I would ask 'what is the definition of illusion being used when speaking of the human mind?' Looked at from a particular skeptical stance, everything to do with the mind that takes place between our ears (or inside our skins if you want a more holistic view of consciousness) is illusion.

You need to go deeper than that, I believe. Apparently it resets that switch on updates. Someone earlier in the thread posted instructions or a link on how to nuke it permanently.

Yeah. 'Chrome silently installs a 4 GB local LLM on your computer'
In brief: in Chrome's address box, enter the special URL chrome://flags. In the resulting page, look for an entry named optimization-guide-on-device-model and set it to Disabled, then restart Chrome. The browser should then delete the weights.bin file.

In theory, you can also use your OS to block this – or deploy enterprise policies, if you're free to set your own. (With any luck, soon this will be part of the Just The Browser policy that we reported on in January.)

The Reddit post we linked above says that Windows users can set a Registry key. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome, create a DWORD key called GenAILocalFoundationalModelSettings and set it to 1, then restart Chrome.

Now we need a firmware update for Tero's brain so that he doesn't rely on the hallucination machine so much... :D

Use Brave. It's chrome with built in ad blocking and no AI.

Well, I do tend to avoid most things chromium based, because I'm really afraid of the heredity and spy nodes being left in the kernel, but brave, I'll make an exception for.

truth to tell, I haven't fully tested it either, if only because the inbuilt vpn actually covers the whole computer when in use, which causes weirdness.
