We are entering a era of despots and terrifying wars of total destruction as peoples squabble over diminishing critical resources. :smoke:

Speaking of, any ideas on how to escalate the Dokto/Takeshima dispute to a military level? :eddy:

On 'the Japan thing'. That is : the Fukushima nuclear accident.

Nearly 20,000 people are known to have died from the earthquake and tsunami.
Three (count them - 3) people died at the Fukushima nuclear power plant, and all three died of industrial accidents. Not one death from radiation.

A recent New Scientist item looked at the long term effects of radiation from the Fukushima power plant, and stated that there will probably not be one single death that can be blamed on radiation from there.

When Crumple said : "We are entering a era of despots and terrifying wars of total destruction as peoples squabble over diminishing critical resources" - I do hope that was in jest. There is certainly no evidence of such a thing. In fact, over the last 100 years, deaths in war as a percentage of the male population globally have been steadily decreasing. The world is getting more, not less peaceful.
For every human action, there is a rationalisation and a reason. Only sometimes do they coincide.

Calm before the storm. Everyone playing nice as they arrange their pieces for Apocalypse Now. The Middle East fake spring is a hint of the real chaos coming into the world. :smoke:

Crumple

A belief in a forthcoming disaster, when there is no empirical evidence to support that belief, is the same as a religious belief based on faith. It is just as irrational. Just as stupid.

Don't encourage him. He is a tragedy of a human being if he thinks the way he posts.

The people who embrace the supposed coming collapse of civilization, usually libertarians, are spineless cowards who are too lazy and fearful to engage with their fellow humans. Sit in your bunkers assholes, the world won't miss you.

Why don't you start the ball rolling and your dedication to the cause by killing your family members, children, then yourself.

Good reason to have guns, food, bunkers and Lima Mike Indias around.

Pity about you Brits, you're just completely fucked in each and every particular, so you'll be the first to go.

I'll be the last.

As a non Brit, let me state my view. The Brits have shown their courage and determination on many occasions. They fought a much superior Luftwaffe to a standstill in 1939, and, in the very unlikely circumstance where they need to do it again, they will stand up to adversity in a way the world can admire.

On the other hand, there is no need to fear. There is no more cold war. The risk of nuclear war has diminished markedly. The only potential enemies to the west are weak and disunited. Most of those nutters who like to predict disaster have moved from military disaster to ecological. They will be proved just as wrong as their predecessors.

Of all those nutters, among the silliest are the so-called survivalists with their stockpiles of guns and ammunition. They are far more a part of the problem than the solution.

The normalcy bias, a sad misreading of the times and complacency. Deluded by the safety of your bunks you are all very likely to drown in them. The faith in perpetual societal progress regardless of the evidence is astounding by some here. Religous faith transformed into a blind unquestioning faith in the triumph of human ingenuity despite the historical evidence...these idealogues will lead you all onto the very rocks Crumple warned you all about. :smoke:
