Re: SETI@home. Worthwhile or waste of CPU time?
I'm still doing SETI and QuakeCatcher because I'm hoping to find intelligent life in this Universe before the Big One hits Missouri.

I do seti at home. Occasionally, but I'm such a CPU hog.

I have SETI on my laptop, in the other room where I'm not tempted to run two keyboards at once. In here I have SETI and QuakeCatcher.AshtonBlack wrote:I do seti at home. Occasionally, but I'm such a CPU hog.

My time spent towards SETI is inversely proportional to my personal CPU time. Which is a lot.Gawdzilla wrote:I have SETI on my laptop, in the other room where I'm not tempted to run two keyboards at once. Do you leave your machine running when you're sleeping? Do you have BOINC set to start computing at 1 minute of idle time?AshtonBlack wrote:My time spent towards SETI is inversely proportional to my personal CPU time. I'm not sure if you've seen this, but if you are as nerdy as I am, here is the team link which tracks all of the data:

Agreed! Plus, I have a personal vandetta against "Nerds for Jesus" for obvious reasons. How dare Jesus nerds fold more proteins than us!FBM wrote:Whoa! 10th, am I?RPizzle wrote:Right now, you are the 10th top producer of science on the team. http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/ ... s=&t=75655OK, I looked at that page, but I think I'd have to go back to college to learn how to decipher most of it. But I did find the place where it showed that I'm the 10th top producer...

Speaking of the "Nerds for Jeebus", are we catching up with them? Last I saw, we were WAY behind...RPizzle wrote:Agreed! Plus, I have a personal vandetta against "Nerds for Jesus" for obvious reasons. How dare Jesus nerds fold more proteins than us!

We have double their output, but they have 13 million more points. Our overtake time is 11.7 months. They are Rank 202, so we'll be heading towards the top tier by that point.FBM wrote:Speaking of the "Nerds for Jeebus", are we catching up with them? I think I can keep all my machines running for a year. May even add more before then.RPizzle wrote:We have double their output, but they have 13 million more points. Our overtake time is 11.7 months. Re: SETI@home. Worthwhile or waste of CPU time?
I'm calling POE here. The subject line says "waste of CPU time", but BOINC only runs when the computer is idle. So the wasted time is the time between the user dozing off at the keyboard and the time BOINC starts.

Re: SETI@home. Worthwhile or waste of CPU time?
a) You have the option of letting the program run uninterrupted, andGawdzilla wrote:I'm calling POE here. The subject line says "waste of CPU time", but BOINC only runs when the computer is idle. So the wasted time is the time between the user dozing off at the keyboard and the time BOINC starts.
b) I would often leave the machine on just to let it crunch numbers for SETI.
Thus, extra CPU time...

I leave both mine on all the time. Seti has free run at least eight hours a day. 135,000 credits in the last 18 months. No B.E.M.s, however. :sad:FBM wrote:a) You have the option of letting the program run uninterrupted, andGawdzilla wrote:I'm calling POE here. Re: SETI@home. Worthwhile or waste of CPU time?
I have my own number crunching to do in "downtime". (I'd say about 70% of the downtime) Only then does SETI get a look in.Gawdzilla wrote:I'm calling POE here.
