It's all questions of definitions. When does "post processing" become "shopping" :dunno:

But a true HDR starts from combining several exposures, which in my book goes beyond mere "post processing"

But is it an honest representation of what was visible to some human looking at it there at the time? Some HDR gets you closer to that, some take you off towards a photo-realistic Kincade painting.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

When it obviously looks like a computer image rather than as a real picture, it qualifies as shopped.

Very nice picture, but really too enhanced.

Anyone know if this one is shopped? I stumbled across it on the internet.

Looks a bit dodgy to me, but you never know...

Probably an overlay of several shots. Looks like they changed the color of the strikes in places to get some depth as well.

Nightshots are time-exposures. I once exposed a frame on a moonless, cloudy night for (from memory) 70 seconds and got three sets of lightning on it using a borrowed Nikon F2 with a bog-standard Nikkor 55mm lens. The trick was to use an emulsion with an ISO of 100 or slower, set the f-stop to the smallest available size and bracket the shots in five second steps of exposure times. Of course you need a tripod and a remote cable shutter release.

The above photo looks like it has undergone some colour manipulation.

Sure looks 'enhanced', if only the varicolored lightning bolts.

Yep, no two bolts the same color. Alarm bells.

It's funny how quickly awesome things become mundane to us.
It must be something we evolved, to help us survive. Something can take your breath away and yet within a day you take it for granted. If that sky was there every day, we'd all go oooooohh to see a clear blue sky.
It's all in the eye of the beholder.

I would like to be able to switch off that circuit now and again, and prolong that first-time feeling a bit.
Maybe when they find a cure for alzheimers, they might also find how to selectively erase memories, so you can get that first-time feeling again.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.
