Ah, those French...
To recap my earlier assertion...

Since you are so smart, I am really pleased you guessed wrong. It was found on an island in the Acasta River, Northwest Territories, Canada.

It's so fucking far north it's even north of HERE!

I know I am still 'believing', but I saw a film which detailed this find, shook the man's hand who made this find (with his team) and looked it up on the interwebz.

Admittedly, not a very thorough researching on my part.

Can anyone here direct me to relevant published papers which might be reviewed by competent geologists?

This 'Svartalf' chap has me doubting myself...

Here is a refereed paper on the age of the Acasta Gneiss Complex (PDF format). But it's 12 years old, so there may be more recent discoveries I'm not aware of.
Although it may look like a forum, this site is actually a crowd-sourced science project modelling the slow but inexorable heat death of the universe.

I have seen recent mention of old rocks found on an expedition to Greenland. Something like their seventh year going there before they found the good stuff.

Ok, here it is on the keyboard for scale.

It's a piece of the Henbury meteorite. The Henbury site is a series of 13 or more craters in central Australia that were originally surrounded by large numbers of iron meteorite fragments, now in museums and other collections around the world. This bit was collected way back in the early days well before the site became a protected reserve. Impact about 4000 years ago and apparently recorded in local aboriginal legends. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henbury_Me ... on_Reserve

Geez...I haven't even HELD anything from another planet (that I know of). Faithfree, you have it pretty fucking good. I hope you know it!

Thanks for the photo. I haven't got acrobat installed, but will check out the link to the paper a bit later. Somewhat frustrating that it still doesn't give me a firm answer, but I should have expected it, considering the nature of the question.

Mark just e-mailed me back, I will get back to you all with an update about availability when I can.

The cut face has been ettched with acid to bring out the crystal patterns.

These are called widmanstaetten patterns.

They indicate a cooling rate of 1 kelvin per million years.

(the earth cools at .25 kelvin per million years)

I bought it from a dealer. So I don't know for sure. But it was sold as that.

He also had some beautiful pieces of olivine with iron droplets in.

outside my budget I'm afraid

Don't give Pappa one! He would only beat it on his anvil...

I didn't know so many people on here had large meteor samples. That is really cool!
