Finally, in the summer, temperatures soar. In August, huge swaths of the Arctic Ocean surface measured 20 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than normal. Ice now almost never makes it through the summer: Less than 1 percent of sea ice in 2018 formed more than four years ago. When scientists began tracking that figure back in the 1980s, one-sixth of all sea ice was at least four years old.

Animal life is cratering in response to these year-round changes. Caribou and reindeer herds have lost more than half their animals since the 1980s, said Howard Epstein, a professor at the University of Virginia. About 4.7 million caribou and reindeer roamed the tundra a few decades ago. Only 2.1 million do so today.

To be honest I'm a bit embarrassed to have taken such a strong position on it. It's clear I have no clue!

Last night I went to see a climate talk, I believe a slightly more up to date version of this one recorded a couple years ago. A lot of very well presented data about where we are, how we got here, and what we must do to avoid the worst catastrophes. Very alarming but also quite optimistic considering the rapid rise of campaigns like Extinction Rebellion and the students climate strikes. Time is rapidly running out but we can still change things if we take action now. Well worth the watch. One particular point that I found striking was that when looking at global average temperatures the last ice age was only about 4-5°C lower than modern pre-industrial temperatures. If we carry on as we are over the next couple of decades then the global average temperature will be an equivalent amount higher before the end of this century. We need to act now. Divest your pensions and savings, eat less meat, reduce fossil fuel powered private transport and join political campaigns.

China is on board.

China’s leaders have declared that the impacts of climate change “pose a huge challenge to the survival and development of the human race” and that China is “one of the most vulnerable countries to the adverse impacts of climate change.”

They have got a lot to do as they have a huge amount of what could be called industrial momentum going in the wrong direction, but they are also putting in huge efforts to reverse it. I believe they are currently building almost as much solar power as the rest of the world combined.

They've also just announced a space solar array. Will collect vastly more solar energy than earth based installations.
