It's mostly bullshit anyway. Modern politically correct guilt.

For example : who says that loss of biodiversity is accelerating? I have read enough to know that there is no "measured" acceleration. Those ideas are all based on dubious calculations. Dubious because they are based on assumptions that are likely to be wrong.

The biggest human caused extinction event ended 500 years ago in my country. It was the loss of 2,000 species of birds (20% of the global total) on isolated Pacific islands, with the migration of the Polynesian peoples. They killed and ate the larger bird species, and their 'passengers' in the migration - the Polynesian rat, killed and ate the smaller species. Nothing else humans have done matches that event for sheer extinction destructiveness. No-one at the time suggested that this was a major ecological catastrophe.

The first major extinction event caused by humans seems to be the arrival of humans in Australia 40,000 to 60,000 years ago. Over 100 species of mega-fauna were killed off.

Today, what do we see? Not much really. The number of species actually measured to be going extinct varies between 10 and 20 per year, and very few of them are vertebrates. That has not stopped the enthusiasts claiming massive numbers of extinctions. They just do not admit their claims have nothing to do with observed reality.
For every human action, there is a rationalisation and a reason. Only sometimes do they coincide.

I was worried, but I only got 25 years left so no worries. Except gas. We will be riding three wheeled covered scooters soon. Mopoauto in Finnish.

Guys,

I hope you are aware that this strange belief so many people have, that humanity is headed for global disaster, is one based on emotion, not reason.

Sure, there are problems. When have there not been problems?
However, today, humanity has more tools at its disposal to solve those problems than any time in history. I am not aware of any predicted problem that is not solvable with ingenuity and determination.
For every human action, there is a rationalisation and a reason. Only sometimes do they coincide.

I think we have some tens of thousands of years left. But not at 10 billion people.

Tero

The trend world wide is to lower fertility. By the time we get 10 billion, the population will be falling. I do not know how low it will drop, but it will be dropping.

If you are correct, and I suspect you are, and humanity has tens of thousands of years, then by that time, not only will the population be increasing again, but our species will be scattered across our corner of this galaxy. It is a lot more difficult for species extinction when it is that dispersed.

The risks are too great. Extinction is forever. We need someone with a little bit of foresight to do what is necessary. You cannot rely on a 'blackswan event' to naturally arrise and get people out of this. It is magical thinking to hope the impact will reduce simply because the population has stabilised and begun to reduce very slowly. There is need for a absolute population crash. :coffee:

I can't wait years and years. I want a global disaster now! I have to give a PowerPoint presentation next Wednesday! Can't we come up with at least a little regional catastrophe or something?

Thank you, but I don't know how that's going to get me out of the PowerPoint presentation. :sigh:
