Nice shots, FBM! I don't have a filter, but I had one that turned out thus:

The double-image one I took was without a solar filter, too. :dunno:

Were you shooting through fog or mist or clouds or anything like that, Bella?

Beautiful pics there.

We did end up seeing it here; it was about 80%. I didn't get any good pictures, because I'm an idiot when it comes to photography, but we did make a pinhole viewer and get a gander.
these are things we think we know
these are feelings we might even share
these are thoughts we hide from ourselves
these are secrets we cannot lay bare.

80% is what they say we got here. But the fog rolled in right around half-time, so I don't know if that last one was actually peak or not. But it was good to get the telescope out for a change. It's the first time I've used it for a celestial event, rather than just as practice. Can't wait til we can see the moon at night again.

FBM, I believe the eclipse itself can bring the fog. The vanishing of the suns heat can make the temperature drop below the dewpoint, and hence fog. At least, the only full eclipse I experienced was the same. We where at sea on a beautiful morning, and when the sun was almost gone, a massive dim bank rolled in, and completely shadowed the corona period. :lay:

Those double pics. Could they be some memory effect in the sensor? Or maybe the big blob is UV or IR burns, and the crescent the actual picture? :dunno: I am guessing here.

It's an internal reflection in the lens (or other camera optics) that causes the double image. In normal circumstances it's so faint as to be un-noticeable, but the sun's quite bright. The reflection is always 180° from the actual image of the sun.

Here are two I took of last year's partial eclipse, and you'll see what I mean:

By Jove, I hadn't thought of that. I do recall at one point taking a pic and immediately afterwards noticing how much darker the day had become. Within a few minutes, the fog bank rolled in. :eddy:

I think TA is right on the money here. I can't imagine anything else other than some lens-mirror reflection event in the camera. I don't know of any memory effect in sensors, but I'm not an expert, either. I don't think you can do double-exposures with digital like you could with film. Again, I'm no expert...
