Why do you guys pluralize math?
Because it is short for Mathematics. Or do you call it Mathematic, or something?

So many syllables. We just call it math. It is all math, just math.
Or we say what we are doing--Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus, Arithmetic.

Because it involves many mathematical skills...
Not just one.
I just spent a day creating a fiendish maths assignment involving circular functions and calculus!

You can try, but you will never quite attain the full horror...

My memory from reading books on the history of maths was that, early on, quadratic (and other equations) were described in words, which was clumsy and lengthy. A lot of progress was made when things were simplified using letters for unknown terms etc.

Very much so. The programme hasn't got that far yet, just up to Hypatia and the Library of Alexandria (which I already knew about)...fascinating stuff though, and he's an excellent presenter, as klr points out.
As might be expected, maths was really invented by the taxmen...
