Anyhoo - I love the Titanic and all things Titanic, and I'm sick of bastards saying "Don't salvage anything, it's a graveyard." No it's not - it's the fuckin' Titanic, and I want a lump of coal or a plate from the bastard!

Champagne should be lying at the bottom of the sea if there is any justice. They have produced the foulest spoilt grape juice ever.devogue wrote: We won't even need to bring drink because there's shit loads of Champagne lying at the bottom in good nick!

Thanks, I didn't know. However, to me, this old one will always be THE (g)nice rock!Ghatanothoa wrote:Gneiss is just a classification of metamorphic rock. I assume you meant he found a formation of gneiss which is 3.962 billion years old.

Since you are so smart, I am really pleased you guessed wrong. It was found on an island in the Acasta River, Northwest Territories, Canada.Ghatanothoa wrote: Where did he find it? Greenland is my guess, that's where most of the really old stuff is.

That's old, but some of our dna may actually be older.
Does anybody know if we still carry the first dna?

There's a piece of the moon at my local museum. I'd love to break open the case and touch it.

I did two years of dual-honours Biology/Geology (before switching to single-honours Biology for my final year), so it'd be a bit fucking embarrassing if I hadn't heard of gneiss before.

Because of my lack of education I didn't phrase the question very well (as pointed out by an earlier pedantress/pedantrer) but what I meant to ask was if folks knew about this particularly old bit which was found quite recently.Horwood Beer-Master wrote:Yes!AshtonBlack wrote:Indeed. So had you known about this particular find, Horwood Beer-Master?

Re: I just touched science!
Well done Cunt! I'd like a bit for the mantle piece.
As a geologist I have heard of the Acasta Gneiss. The claimant for the world's oldest rock keep changing. For years it used to be the Isua Gneiss in Greenland (3.8 billion years). Where next? Here in Australia we have even older mineral grains, back to 4.4 billion years, but only as microscopic components incorporated into somewhat younger sedimentary rocks.
And next to me now I have an even older rock, but it's not from earth - as an iron meteorite I'm assuming about 4.55 billion like the rest, but will admit this actual specimen hasn't been dated.

Although it may look like a forum, this site is actually a crowd-sourced science project modelling the slow but inexorable heat death of the universe.
Re: I just touched science!
As would I. I am waiting, thighs wet with anticipation, for more word on getting my autographed piece. If you would like, I can send you his e-mail (via PM) so that you can ask him for one yourself. If I heard the rumour correctly, he is charging about 150 CD for a piece. Considering what it took to find it, and what it takes to go get some, I think it's a bargain!Faithfree wrote:Well done Cunt! I was going to ask the same question... except AFAIK, the oldest I knew of up to recently were from the Canadian shield... to the point that some of those are actually called Labrador Stone in FrenchGhatanothoa wrote:Gneiss is just a classification of metamorphic rock.
