It will eventually put direct mail out of business. I used to use Borders coupons routinely, so the ads do in fact work. They will sell you memberships pf give frequent buyer cards like Best Buy that set you up for junk mail.

It's a problem in web design. If you create a piece of content that looks a bit like an ad, users simply ignore it.

You have an option to opt out of mailings with Best Buy, but you have to be alert for the opportunity to do so. You can still tell them to knock it off afterwards. Less reputable companies may not give you the opportunity, or ignore cease-and-desist requests.

All this shameless and intrusive advertising is part of "the cost of free" IMHO. That doesn't mean that I don't like it, or think that there is much more of it than is necessary to underwrite "free" use of the Internet, or parts of it.

The slickest work is the ads on most pages. It's like the predator-prey rule. "One is fighting for a meal, the other is fighting for its life." The guys that write the ads try harder in most cases.

I do think that googles adserve are doing a bit too good of a job though, every site I go to with the most unrelated topics and I see adverts for RC stuff.

Nah, I'd rather see the advert for the new Bixler or Geebee 3 airplane than the dating site adverts anyway.

I still am bothered at how much content I'm barred from due to my inability to take the 'premium' options, even when I want to.

Just how big a free lunch do you feel entitled to?

Given that I do have to suffer through the ads and popups that seem to be able to get around the blocking software, big enough that I don't feel hungry anymore?
