Um, which tsunamis would we be talking about? There are no recent "mystery" tsunamis that I know of.

You've got the title wrong. It should read man-made earthquakes.
As the tsunami is a result of the huge earthquake that set it going.
Men do make small earthquakes. But millions of times less powerful than that one.
So I say mith.

Well, I was thinking of all the atomic bombs that are experimented with in the oceans. They must cause some kind of disturbance down deep and eventually speed up some kind of cracking process therefore creating tsunamis.

Speculative. There were studies done in the early atomic years to see if a nuke could do just that, and the results were disappointing. They never got to a test stage, but the numbers just weren't there. The energy released in a 7.0 quake is orders of magnitude above any nuke we've every built. And there's the problem of where to put it. The surface faults like the San Andreas run for many, many miles and we don't even know if the bomb should be on the fault or somewhere else.kiki5711 wrote:Well, I was thinking of all the atomic bombs that are experimented with in the oceans. The energy of an atomic bomb, or an H bomb, is minute compared to a big earthquake.kiki5711 wrote:Well, I was thinking of all the atomic bombs that are experimented with in the oceans. The best you could do is set one off that was due to go at any minute anyway.
That wouldn't make it man-made. Just man-triggered.
And you would need to know a lot more about earthquakes than we currently do, to know exactly when and where to set off your triggering bomb.
Mith.

I don't really have that much time to watch a Youtube while hoping to catch the point you want to make. Sorry.

What a lot of people don't realise is that the common scales that are used to classify earthquakes are logarithmic, not linear.
An earthquake measuring three releases over thirty times the energy of a 2, and a four releases a thousand times more.
A five releases more than thirty thousand times the energy of a 2. And so on.
A six is a million times more than a 2.
When you get to the really big earthquakes, the scales actually break down, and cannot adequately describe the energy released. An atomic bomb is like a gnat's fart, in comparison.

I really don't have a point to make. It was just something I was thinking about. I have no clue about any of this, just very interesting to me.Gawdzilla wrote:I don't really have that much time to watch a Youtube while hoping to catch the point you want to make. Sorry.

From a physics perspective, and from everything I have read on the issue, the answers you have received are spot on...kiki5711 wrote:I really don't have a point to make.
