A Military Land Drone

Post by Atheist-Lite » Sun Dec 12, 2010 10:07 pm

I think there must be a optimum form for this. A short quarters robot perhaps built in a similar way to a humanoid so that it can use weaponry against human beings and observe its environment with a similar range...rather than a science fiction motif I've been trying to figure out what a military droid might come down to in a practical form. Any ideas?

Something based on the Badger may or may not be in production in the US or somewhere else. I could saying for sure, but this is just an exercise, not an actual discussion.

The main problem I see is that you end up with something more valuable than a soldier.
IMO want something fairly disposable even if the price of that is not being all singing and dancing.

I would favour a remote controlled 8 legged mobile gun platform - capable of taking incoming bullets, even if not an RPG. Being able to raise the gun above the usual man height / angle would be a useful tactical advantage, as well as some of the eyes giving a view point from 20 foot up. Would also be capable of a live feed to controllers to the rear, overhead or accross the world for identifying targets, but I think leaving target selection to those on the ground. Moible range does not have to be great - not for marching on Moscow - but good enough to clear a village. but bring to the battlefield by Humvee.

Being able to attach differing weapons (minigun or sniper rifle - or both!) and shit loads of ammo, for own use and for the troops would be useful.

Ok, it's a playstation with a gun. and legs!

I'm glad the military doesn't take orders from Santa Claus.

You stand outside, I'll get in. Five sticks of dynamite on the top. Stand close, you don't want to miss this.

I've noticed the American shuttles are getting smaller too. Cremation before take-off was a brilliant solution to the cost per flight?

We haven't built a good robot yet, so it's a bit premature making it military.
Once you have a design that can always self-right itself, and get over and past virtually any obstacle, you could try to adapt it to military use.
We don't seem to have made huge progress with that.
The robot they tried to use in the New Zealand mine got stuck. The mars robots have worked ok, but they have been very careful not to ask much of them, keeping them from difficult obstructions.
That's why flying drones have such a huge advantage. They have a very predictable environment. I can't see land drones matching them for a long long time.
I would be looking at insects or millipedes, to see which conformation right's itself easiest, and try to build something along those lines. After all, they have miniscule brains, so the layout must be good.
.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.
