Android Honeycomb

Post by Ilovelucy » Tue Dec 07, 2010 10:50 am

Tablets look set to overtake Netbooks in 2011 and the market leader by a country mile is obviously the Apple iPad. The only alternative has been tablet PCs running Google Android (Galaxy Tab, Dell Streak), which its own makers admit is designed for phones and not tablets, therefore not yet adequate competition for the iOS. However it has just been announced that Honeycomb, Android 3.0, will be tailored towards the tablet experience and will be available early next year. I have wanted to buy a tablet for a while now but found the iPad to be highly desirable in its own way but too expensive and lacking in some fundamental properties (USB/SD slots, flash etc). It will be interesting to see if these come out before the iPad 2 (which will probably feature cameras and the aforementioned missing elements) and whether sales may suffer due to the previously released inferior Android tablets.

Forums are interesting and if you don't agree, you can fuck off.

Anyone who says Android is inferior likely hasn't used it. I have an ipad andf a Galaxy Tab. I like both, but Android is better for me.

I like Android too, hence why I'm not opening my wallet for a tablet until 3.0 arrives, alongside some decent 10 inch tablets.

I'm never too bothered about waiting for os builds with Android. Theres never a short supply of roms to flash if you you need an upgrade.

I should add that the inferior tablets I referred to aren't so much the Galaxy Tab, or even the Advent Vega, but rather the lower end of the market such as the infamous Next tablet.

I still don't see why people are getting so excited about tablets. Apart from the gimmicky touch screen shit they are inferior in every way to an equivalently priced laptop
Outside the ordered universe is that amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the center of all infinity—the boundless daemon sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time and space amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin monotonous whine of accursed flutes.

Code: Select all

// Replaces with spaces the braces in cases where braces in places cause stasis
   $str = str_replace(array("\{","\}")," ",$str);

For me personally, I do a fair amount of public speaking and they would be particularly useful. I couldn't use a laptop as an e-reader either.I also like the fact that I could print less documents for meetings and bring them up on the device instead. I have brought my lap top to meetings when my printer does its regular orange flashing light routine and have spent a bit too much time trying to make light conversation while waiting for the damn thing to boot up.

That said, everyone that has turned up with a iPad at the open mic I run has ended up with half the audience listening and the other half not listening at all, just staring at the device and thinking "I want one!"

I was a bit dismissive of the iPad when it came out but subsequently have found that my iPod Touch is permanently glued to my hand when I'm at home.

So a giant iPod now seems a neat idea and I want one :)
