Colourblind? Ever wanted to see new colours?
Like many others I am colour-blind, like many others I normally couldn't give two shits. The only time it has ever had any effect on me is when watching football, (that's real football to you sepos) or rugby or playing it on the playstation. My poor brother was bounced from the Air Corps cadets because of colourblindness, but it has rarely influenced me other than when people ask "so what colour's this?, and this?" (oh what fun we have...... pricks).
Today some scienticians have announced a possible cure for colour-blindness ( here's the BBC story) and I must admit I'm intrigued as to what it would be like to see a whole new colour or would it just give a greater perception of shades of colour, I can't imagine myself trying out for a pilots license in the future but I'm curious about about any change in perception, will I hate my favourite paintings?, will garish take on a whole new meaning?, will I throw out my wardrobe?. Any thoughts from fellow chromatically challenged folks?

I have flare burns on my retinas so there are times I can't see certain colors. It's a constant maybe for me if I'll see the world like it was five minutes ago. This has made me indifferent to the current colors I see. I guess I just don't get excited about it.

That is utterly fantastic! If you ever get the chance Owtth, go for it! I have all of the normal colours at my disposal but if a chance ever came to add to the spectrum, perhaps modified genes that allow vision into the UV or IR ranges, I would jump at the chance.
Just think what a fantastic opportunity it will be - very very few people manage to get such an introduction to new sensory input at an age when they are old enough to appreciate it, only those cured of long-term blindness or deafness. I almost envy you your colour-blindness. It will be like the colour-augmentation of acid - only permanent! Having seen simulations of RGCB, I can tell you that you will not regret adding to your repertoire.

I can understand that, and to me colour-blindness is no big deal, but what if you could see a colour you have never seen before? It may be so good you are compelled to spell it as GOD intended

In my wildest dreams this is what it would amount to. Being of a more practical mindset I am given to think that it will just give me a greater ability to separate shades (for me colour-blindness seems just an inability to define differing shades). Experiencing a new colour, however, must surely kick ass.Xamonas Chegwé wrote:That is utterly fantastic! If you ever get the chance Owtth, go for it! Good luck to you with that.I can understand that, and to me colour-blindness is no big deal, but what if you could see a colour you have never seen before? The music bit is funny. There's one "color" I call "banjo angry" because the first time I saw it was while watching Deliverance.

Colours are strange I've had dreams about the banjo/guitar duel where the banjo is always a yellow/orange (same to me) whilst the guitar is a redish brown, so I guess yellow is twangy whilst mellow colours are more .... mellow. As an aside, I can play the guitar part of that tune reasonably well, with some dodgy filler for the banjo part, never fails to get a great reaction, even from folks who've never seen the movie. Next time I'm gonna hand out 3d glasses.

Thanks, but the strange thing about colour-blindness is that we (or at least I) can never see it as something needing a cure, and I'd hate it if someone thought I was comparing it to a genuine sensory disability, I enjoy a lovely sunset as much as the next person. There is sometimes the slight nagging sense that perhaps you are not getting the full whack. Perhaps it's like putting on a High Definition disc on a 20 year old TV or something to that effect, but until a treatment comes along I will never know. It's possible that in twenty year's time I'll turn around and say, "hey, I've been looking at shit in crapovision" it'd be cool if that were the case.
EDIT: For very impressive lightning storm knocking out loads of shit.
At least I'm housebroken.

Fascinating. I am colour blind. I felt kind of special when doing the tests and I did the one that only the colour blind can see.
