Dolphin With Legs?
Dolphin With Legs?
Back in November 2007 there was an article all over papers about a dolphin found with what may be hind legs protruding.
I was going to use this as evidence for evolution with my creationist house mate when I decided, prudently, to check my facts first.
When I Googled it the top searches are all creationsit opinions on this mostly copied and pasted from and article in AIG claiming it was only hind fins and that papers were parading this as proof of evolution before they done any x-rays or anything (which, in fairness, they did).
Does anyone know what happened with this as I can't find any articles about the proposed x-rays and further tests?

Re: Dolphin With Legs?
I have a reference around here regarding dolphins occasionally being born with atavistic legs. I'll dig.Animavore wrote:Back in November 2007 there was an article all over papers about a dolphin found with what may be hind legs protruding.

Re: Dolphin With Legs?

I don't see what difference it makes to the argument. Don't dolphins have vestigial rear limbs like other cetaceans anyway?
Edit:-
Just found this wiki reference to your 'belegged' dolphin.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolphin#Anatomy
Modern dolphin skeletons have two small, rod-shaped pelvic bones thought to be vestigial hind limbs. In October 2006 an unusual Bottlenose Dolphin was captured in Japan; it had small fins on each side of its genital slit which scientists believe to be a more pronounced development of these vestigial hind limbs.[8]

I think only the larger ones have them, the smaller ones have absorbed them long ago.Major Eyeswater wrote:![]()

Re: Dolphin With Legs?
Hmmmm.........
The creationists are shooting their own argument out of the air here because the development of fins from vestigial legs would actually constitute an evolutionary step forwards for an animal that was evolving from land-living back to sea-going - would it not?
Just a thought.....
Actually, thinking about this:Animavore wrote:Back in November 2007 there was an article all over papers about a dolphin found with what may be hind legs protruding.

Watch their faces as you point out the closest genetic relative to the elephant is the dugong.Major Eyeswater wrote:Hmmmm.........
