I keep as much data as possible away from the Windows system partition, which makes backing up the system state very easy and quick.

When I have finished rescuing all my important shit I will be keeping as much stuff as possible away from the windows partition full stop. Windows is going to be for gaming only everything else is going on the linux side

On the Windows partition, "Documents and Settings" will still contain some personal information and program settings, even if you try and keep all the data it on another partition. :lay:

Apparently, it is possible to have "Documents and Settings" on a partition other than the Windows system partition, but it's a bit tricky:

you misunderstand. I will be using windows like a console. Everything else will be done in linux. I just wish they would get linux gaming sorted so I could drop the shit altogether

I'm not a big gamer, and most of the games that I do have are quite old. So I can't t really comment on this ... but I will. :pardon:

I just can't imagine there being a rush to port many games to Linux, no matter how much better an environment it might be for running games, technically speaking. I'd like to see it happen, but I just don't think it will. Maybe Windows 8 will finally succeed in pissing off so many people that Linux becomes an attractive alternative for a lot of serious gamers.

The problem is with the hardware manufacturers. The graphics drivers they fling together in 5 minutes for linux are a big steaming pile of shite. The porting to unix is already happening for macs so I cant see it being too much work to do linux too if the drivers were up to scratch

Oh, I'm with you on that one. I can't run most versions of Linux on this PC as they barf at my current AMD Radeon graphics card. Although I bought it only a few months ago, it's hardly new technology. AMD do provide a generic Linux driver , but it looks like it might need some serious voodoo to get it working.

Try mint. They are very good at getting rid of the usual linux headaches. Most of the time everything just works without any tinkering at all

Probably because you haven't been properly flummoxed yet.

I don't always partition my drive, but when I do I always go from front to back.
