Remember the 80s when they announced a cure for AIDS every other year? How long was it before tri therapies were really able to hold it at bay for 5 years or more?
Relax, dude. It will either work or it won't.

Get Terry Pratchett on the trial ASAP!

At least in the US, if they don't keep the ratings up, they lose their jobs. So creating hype is a reaction/adjustment to the demands of the job (my sis was a TV news producer for the first decades of her career - she finds teaching to be a less stressful and more ethical way to do journalism in today's USA).

Do I like the way the media market works in the US today? Hell no! And I'm none too sure about Europe, either. Our main Finnish-language newspaper sucks golf balls, if not larger ones, but it has done so since I started to read it in the late 1970s...

So I would not blame the individual journalist for the hype, at least not too quickly/easily.

80s? IIRC, HIV was determined to cause AIDS in 1984. 90s maybe, or even early 21st century. And HAART is very effective. You have to remember that most diseases are never cured; treatments, effective treatments even, are found — but that's not a cure.

I really mean the 80s... back then, one year it was a vaccine, next it was Chinese kale, some time later they even spoke of cyclosporin and/or some kind of interferon...
In the 90s, it quieted down, at least in France. and since 2000, I think that the only "AIDSs news" I heard of was about a vaccine that was admitted to have fizzed out a couple months later.
