Day 5 - The attitude of the knife

Can that be the young man the Reverend Mother meant? Is that a bloodline we must preserve?
- Lady Margot Fenring

Feyd-Rautha dipped his head with the required courtesy. He stared at the Lady Fenring. She was golden-haired and willowy, her perfection of figure clothed in a flowing gown of ecru — simple fitness of form without ornament. Gray-green eyes stared back at him. She had that Bene Gesserit serene repose about her that the young man found subtly disturbing.
- Dune

- Arrakis teaches the attitude of the knife — chopping off what's incomplete and saying: "Now it's complete because it's ended here."
- from Collected Sayings of Muad'Dib by the Princess Irulan

You wake groggily to a distant but ominous droning "thump-thump-thump" echoing over the rocky outcrop. You and your companions crawl out of your tents and stagger to the rock's edge to look across the sands. You see two figures. One stands quietly next to the thumper she has activated. Behind you, someone cries, "Aiii, she calls a maker!"

Closer to you, and moving rapidly toward the woman is a man with sword at the ready.

The woman is a guileless study of defiance and resignation. The thumper's drone is drowned out by the harsh sounds of heavy scales against sand.. Shai Hulud is almost directly beneath her feet. This one is a great grandfather of the desert, monstrous in size. The sharp scent of melange is overpowering even here on the outcrop. The huge sandworm rises, then glides grandly over the dune, to dive deep into the sand once again.

When the worm is gone, no trace remains of sifaka save a few footprints in the sand.

The swordsman stops, turns and makes his way carefully back to the rock.

sifaka was Lady Margot Fenring, Bene Gesserit, mother of Feyd-Rautha's infant daughter, and scum prostitute.

The Atreides and allied Fremen win. Congratuations, town!

MVP goes to irreligionist, aka Duncan Idaho, Swordsmaster of Ginaz. Good Game!

I look forward to your feedback about the game design. I'll share my thoughts after I take my licks.

Woo! Hoo! You won the game for us Irre. Congrats on a job well done! :toot:

I was Duke Leto Atreides, father of Paul Atreides. If scum had tried to kill me at night I would have used my poison tooth to kill them as well. I was trying to get them to target me by being vocal but so many other good targets appeared that I didn't have a chance to be NK'ed.

Good work Town!

Oh, and let me say I think this was a very fun game oblivion. It would have been interesting to see what happened if Irre had missed a scum for even one night.

Along with the stellar vig work, being able to form a Town cabal so early in the game helped out tremendously.

Here's the full list of players and roles (I gave scum and indies "safe" name claims):

Player - Role
Town

NonCredo - Paul Atriedes - mason, beloved princes
ksen - Duke Leto - poison toot
CookieJon - Jessica - seer
Miss Anne Thrope - Chani - mason, backup seer
irreligionist - Duncan Idaho - vig, ghola
virphen - Thufir Hawat - jailer
higgs2 - Dr Yueh - lover
Normal - Liet Kynes
AshtonBlack - Esmar Tuek - recruited
Mephistopheles - Jamis - bodyguard for Paul
I_pity_the_fool - Korba
heyzeus - Faroula
MantisDreamz - Staban Tuek
Animavore Wanna Yueh - lover
95Theses Ramallo - truthsayer

Scum
DP Feyd-Rautha/Gurney Halleck
GhataNothoa Rabban Harkonnen/Geoff
sifaka Lady Fenring/Otheym
Evil Spock Piter De Vries/Farok
AshtonBlack Esmar Tuek - recruited on night 1

Indie
Blip Reverend Mother Helen Mohiam/Stilgar
rezling Count Fenring/Shadout Mapes

Some things that could have happened, but didn't:

ksen could have killed his own night killer
Duncan Idaho could have been resurrected as a Ghola. If that had happened, his alignment (town or scum) would have been settled by a random roll.
The mason cabal could have grown if Jessica had viewed either Paul, Chani or Leto, or if Chani had viewed Leto.

What's filthy about being a whore?
Even with the shortage of water on Arrakis, I did manage to bathe everyday, thank you very much.

Irre, you've been banned for 3 months for...... I don't know, I'll forge a few posts full of Ad-homs or something.

How the hell did you target us so accurately?

The world is a thing of utter inordinate complexity and richness and strangeness that is absolutely awesome. I mean the idea that such complexity can arise not only out of such simplicity, but probably absolutely out of nothing, is the most fabulous extraordinary idea. And once you get some kind of inkling of how that might have happened, it's just wonderful. And . . . the opportunity to spend 70 or 80 years of your life in such a universe is time well spent as far as I am concerned.

3 out of 5 scum voted for me straight away when they had the chance to jump on the bandwagon v 3 of the 15 town.
I told you to look toward people who were quick to vote me and I was right.
My technique to flush people out worked and you over-looked it.

The usual complaint about my games is that I slant them too far in favor of scum, and I think that's a fair assessment. This time, I built a slightly overpowered town in compensation for you guys not being familiar with no-PM games. A seer, a backup seer and a lie detector meant that town was able to clear an awful lot of players by the end of the game. This coupled with the phenomenal killer instincts of irreligionist meant that by day 4 there were far too few unconfirmed town for the scum to hide among. And then there were the poor indies, both out before day 2 began. They, too were meant to be game balancers, alas.

The lovers roles were meant to be a net liability to town, but the rest of the town specials were at least net neutral if not positive.

It's a risk when the scum recruiter role is invested in a single player. I had wondered if scum would wait until a town player was cleared and recruit him/her. Instead, they did the safe thing and used the recruitment on Night 1.
