There are advantages to developing your own style without help from a mentor, and there are advantages to learning from good players. I've never been mentored in a teaching game like the one we'll be doing here in a week or 3. But, I have benefited from a couple of games where a better player who hadn't signed up for the game gave me some feedback and pointers. I've always wanted to have a really good mentor sometime when I'm scum, because my usual scum game is quite weak compared to my usual town game. Still, I improve bit by bit. I've actually learned a great deal about the game by mentoring other players.

My style of scum-hunting doesn't transfer very well. I finally learned tell-based scum-hunting by having to teach new players.

I may get a friend to GM the teaching game so I can mentor someone, or I may GM the game. I'll decide once I know how many mentors I need versus how many I can scare up.

I'd say that really depends on when you can get enough mentors lined up. I'd almost like to let the signup keep going. These 12 person games are over so fast it's had to get in the swing of things before it's done.
