XP won't recognize my land line. Help?
I plugged a LAN cable straight into the cable modem and computer, but Windows don't see it. Any clues?
And please, put "Buy a Mac" comments in RED so I can ignore them. (There's a Mac not two feet from the PC.)

There's an extra step I'm forgetting I think. It doesn't see a connection to the modem.jaydot wrote:long time since i used windows, but. do you not have to go to control centre and set up connexion?

Go to control panel > device manager and make sure your Netwrok Adapters are working.

Did you try XC. I don't know this XP who would not help you.

I used to do this everyday for work about four years ago. Now I can't remember XP at all!

I set the LAN connect to "automatically detect settings". No joy. But it seemed to do more than before. Nvidia card and a "1364" or something like that.

It's one of those things that if I had an XP in front of me I could go through it.

It's an AT&T connection. I think I have to log into a webpage before going any farther. I don't know if I'll find that page or not.

You might have to run a disk. Usually when you switch to broadband you have to remove your landline from the network settings.

Logged in on the AT&T site, but still can't get Internet. (The AT&T page is an IP number where I can put my password in.) Folks here for the Train Wreck entered our phone number to get access, but I can't that far.

Have you tried cycling the cable modem's power?

I'll try that, but it connected with the switching station about a block away with no problem.Seabass wrote:Have you tried cycling the cable modem's power?

Reticent to offer advice, but did you configure your network connection as 'always on' in your new network connection setup wizard? Cable modems manage themselves IME, so that's all you should have to do.
You're probably connecting to the modem at 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 which I'm guessing brings up the html interface for the device. If you changed any of the connection settings you may need to reset to factory defaults from there.

I'll check the "always on" is on.
